SUMMARY:Educating Health Professionals to Address the Social Determinants of Health
DESCRIPTION:An ad hoc committee under the auspices of the Institute of Medicine will conduct a study to explore how the education of health professionals is currently addressing the social determinants of health in and with communities. As executive director of the nonprofit Health Care Incentives Improvement Institute\, de Brantes has been working with health plans and providers to implement bundled payment programs since 2007.  \nAs we reported recently\, bundled payment initiatives from the federal Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services have been criticized for not taking full advantage of this innovative payment model. In the private sector\, however\, health insurers\, hospitals\, and physicians are demonstrating how to fully develop bundled payment programs and make the operational adjustments needed to ensure their long-term success. \nIn this webinar on Wednesday\, Sept. 2\, at 1:30 pm ET\, de Brantes will discuss how providers and payers are getting good results from bundled payment programs and expanding many of these initiatives. \nAbout the speaker \nFrançois de Brantes\, M.S.\, M.B.A.\, is executive director of the Health Care Incentives Improvement Institute (HCI3)\, a not-for-profit company that designs and implements innovative payment and benefit plan design programs. SUMMARY:Racism: The Silent Partner in High School Dropout and Health Disparities
DESCRIPTION:Across the U.S.\, more than 50 million students will attend public elementary and high schools this fall. Yet only two-thirds of African American and less than three-quarters of Latino students will graduate on time. Also\, more than half of all students attending public school live in poverty. \nBarriers to high school graduation are a key public health concern because high school graduation is a leading indicator of healthy adult behaviors and health status. \nAmerican Public Health AssociationPast President Adewale Troutman\, MD\, MPH\, CPH\, former health director for the City of Louisville\, will lead this timely discussion on the significance of high school graduation to health disparities. And Robert Murphy\, former teacher\, assistant principal and dropout prevention specialist for the Maryland Department of Education\, will examine how current policies and practices in educational systems disproportionately impact students of color and ultimately contribute to disproportionate dropout rates. Join public health leaders as they examine their role in providing the leadership to improve high school graduation rates and dismantling the policies and practices that undermine educational success and health. \n\n\nSept. 1\, 2-3 p.m. ET \n\n\nRegister here.
