SUMMARY:Drug Pricing: Public Health Implications
DESCRIPTION:Live webcast\, Oct. 23\, 12:30-1:30 p.m. ET | Watch at ForumHSPH.org\nA full course of treatment with the blockbuster Hepatitis C drug Sovaldi costs $84\,000 in the United States. A year on the new injectable cholesterol drugs Repatha and Praluent tops $14\,000. The price of new cancer drugs now averages $10\,000 per month\, according to one estimate. \nStraining under the pressure\, doctors\, patients\, and insurers are raising alarms over skyrocketing prices. Earlier this year\, the American Society of Clinical Oncology released a new “value framework” for drugs that considers health benefit and price to help guide doctor-patient conversations around treatment options. \nFor their part\, pharmaceutical companies and some economists argue that the high cost of drug development justifies the price. \nThis Forum will explore the factors driving the high cost of new drugs. What policy changes\, from the drug approval process to patent law\, could change the equation? Are some of these drugs worth the cost? And what can be done to make sure that patients can afford the medications that they need? \nParticipants  \n\n\nSteven Pearson\, President of the Institute for Clinical and Economic Review and Lecturer at Harvard Medical School \n\n\nAaron Kesselheim\, Director\, Program on Regulation\, Therapeutics\, and Law\, Brigham and Women’s Hospital\, and Associate Professor of Medicine\, Harvard Medical School \n\n\nMeredith Rosenthal\, Professor of Health Economics and Policy\, Harvard T.H. SUMMARY:Using NARMS Now\, a CDC data tool on antibiotic resistance
DESCRIPTION:Watch it now\nSee a recording of this webcast. \nSpeaker’s presentation\nSlides from Regan Rickert-Hartman \n\nOct. 22\, Noon ET\nThis year the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention launched the National Antimicrobial Resistance Monitoring System (NARMS Now)\, a database and visualization tool that makes it quicker and easier to see how antibiotic resistance for four bacteria transmitted commonly through food – Campylobacter\, E. coli O157\, Salmonella\, and Shigella – has changed during the past 18 years. \nThe tool allows users to access antibiotic resistance data by bacteria\, antibiotic\, year (1996-2013)\, and geographic region. It displays data on an interactive map or in tables. NARMS Now is designed to provide access to the most up-to-date antibiotic resistance results by uploading data regularly. \nIn this short webcast\, CDC personnel will demonstrate the tool and answer questions about how the data might be used. \n\n\nModerator: Maryn McKenna\, independent journalist\, Atlanta \n\n\nRegan Rickert-Hartman\, senior epidemiologist and program coordinator\, NARMS\, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention \n\n\nRegan Rickert-Hartman is a senior epidemiologist and the program coordinator for the National Antimicrobial Resistance Monitoring System at the CDC. SUMMARY:Reaching Minorities: Health Care Enrollment and Engagement
DESCRIPTION:As we approach the ACA’s third open enrollment\, health insurance is still far from universal for some minority groups. One in five Hispanics were uninsured last year. And although coverage rates among African Americans have surged nationally\, success has varied from state to state based on Medicaid expansion decisions and other factors. This webinar will explore ways to increase coverage among minority populations and to improve understanding of how to use health insurance to access care. \nDate & Time: Oct. 20; 3-4:30 p.m. EDT \nSpeakers: \n\n\nCara James\, Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services \n\n\nJose Plaza\, Enroll America \n\n\nDerek Robinson\, Health Care Service Corporation \n\n\n  \nPresentations will include the following: \n\nlessons learned by Enroll America in the first two years of enrollment outreach  \nthe federal government’s targeted efforts\, including culturally competent resources to help consumers select and retain coverage  \na private-sector push to clarify coverage options under the ACA\, increase overall enrollment and improve health literacy\n\nRegister now for this free webinar\, or check out the draft agenda.

SUMMARY:Optimizing Digital to Reach Patients\, Scientists\, Clinicians\, and the Public
DESCRIPTION:The National Institutes of Health is hosting a summit to explore how digital communication is being used by government agencies\, clinicians\, scientists\, patients\, and the public to share information on health and science. \nAccording to a September 2012 Pew Research Center survey\, 72 percent of Internet users say they looked online for health information within the past year. As health information becomes increasingly accessible\, it’s important to take a look at how these resources are being communicated and shared with the public\, how and where clinicians and scientists are discussing important health topics in the digital sphere\, and the challenges health communicators face with an ever-evolving digital landscape. The summit is designed to encourage discussion and to strengthen scientific communications communities around the digital and social media strategies used in health and science agencies. \nPanel Topics: \n\n\nPanel 1: The patient and caregiver perspective: Managing health conditions using digital tools and social media. \n\n\nPanel 2: Reaching patients and the public where they are: Sharing high quality\, evidence-based information with the public on social media\, blogs\, and mobile apps. \n\n\nPanel 3: The health professional perspective: Using social media to get and share information and interact with other professionals and patients. \n\n\nPanel 4: The scientist’s perspective: Using digital and social media to collaborate\, share ideas\, and communicate research to the public. \n\n\nLipsett Amphitheater\, National Institutes of Health\, Building 10\, 10 Center Drive\, Bethesda\, MD \n Visitor information is available at http://www.nih.gov/about/visitor. \nThere are a select number of seats reserved for media. If you are interested in attending\, please email Katy Danielson at nccihpress@mail.nih.gov. If you are unable to attend in person\, the summit will be Web cast live at videocast.nih.gov. No registration for the livestream is necessary\, but if you’d like\, you can sign up here (Watch via Live Webcast) for an email reminder to watch the lecture. Join the conversation at #NIHDigital.

SUMMARY:International Day for the Eradication of Poverty
DESCRIPTION:Building a sustainable future: Coming together to end poverty and discrimination\nThe International Day for the Eradication of Poverty has been observed every year since 1993\, when the United Nations General Assembly\, by resolution 47/196\, designated this day to promote awareness of the need to eradicate poverty and destitution in all countries. Fighting poverty remains at the core of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and the development of the post-2015 development agenda. \nThis year\, the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty holds particular significance because it will be the first observance following the formal adoption of the Sustainable Development Goals by the General Assembly of the United Nations. Within this new development framework\, designed to replace and carry forward the aims of the Millennium Development Goals\, all countries committed to “ending poverty in all its forms and dimensions.” \n
