SUMMARY:Medical Tests: Inaccuracies\, Risks and the Public's Health
DESCRIPTION:Webcast: Friday\, Dec. 11\, 12:30-1:30pm ET\nSend questions in advance to theforum@hsph.harvard.edu Tweet @ForumHSPH #testsforum \nWithout question\, medical testing has saved lives and bettered patient care. But what happens when tests are inaccurate or unnecessary? The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently raised alarms about a growing class of tests designed and used in single laboratories\, which are far less subject to regulatory enforcement than commercial test kits sold to multiple labs. The agency reviewed 20 case studies involving lab-developed tests (LDTs) and found evidence of patients at risk for medically unnecessary procedures\, including mastectomies\, or for potentially inappropriate therapies\, including cancer treatments. Some tests may fail to detect a condition\, while others may erroneously point to a non-existent problem. The medical costs are significant. The Obama administration is calling for a new regulatory framework as well. \nLDTs are not the only source of concern. A 2013 meta-analysis involving commonly ordered lab tests found that 30 percent\, on average\, were probably unnecessary and\, conversely\, a similar number should have been ordered and were not. \nScrutiny of lab testing is intensifying as the medical community grapples to address diagnostic errors. This year\, the Institute of Medicine issued a study\, Improving Diagnosis in Health Care\, as a continuation of an earlier series of patient safety reports. Pointing to many factors in diagnostic errors\, the recent report states that “most people will experience at least one diagnostic error in their lifetime\, sometimes with devastating consequences.” \nThis Forum will examine the role of medical tests in health care\, looking both at their considerable benefits and risks and asking how to ensure their accuracy\, safety and reliability. \nModerator: Sharon Begley\, Senior Science Writer\, STAT \nExpert Participants: \n\n\nAaron Kesselheim\, Director\, Program on Regulation\, Therapeutics\, and Law\, Brigham and Women’s Hospital \n\n\nLucian Leape\, Chair\, Lucian Leape Institute at the National Patient Safety Foundation\, and Adjunct Professor of Health Policy\, Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health \n\n\nAlberto Gutierrez\, Director\, Office of In Vitro Diagnostics and Radiological Health\, Center of Devices and Radiological Health\, Food and Drug Administration \n\n\nRamy Arnaout\, Associate Director of the Clinical Microbiology Laboratories at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center \n\n\nPresented in Collaboration with Stat \n

SUMMARY:The Healthspan Imperative: New frontiers in science of aging
DESCRIPTION:Watch it now\nRecorded webcast \nSpeaker’s presentation\nSlides from Sue Peschin \nResources\nAHCJ Core Topic: Aging \nAging news from Covering Health blog \nAlliance for Aging Research \nAlliance for Aging Research Pocket Films \nAlliance for Aging Research YouTube Channel \nThe Silver Book \nHealthspan Campaign \nPress contact \nNoel Lloyd: nlloyd@agingresearch.org or 202-370-7852 \n\nDec. 2\, 12:30 p.m. ET\nToday\, average life expectancy is almost 80 years. But\, while we’ve added years to life we haven’t always made those extra years healthy and vigorous. Eighty percent of seniors have at least one major chronic condition\, and half have two or more. Chronic diseases of later life cost our nation more than $1 trillion per year and will increase to $6 trillion by 2050. \nA new frontier in science is revealing the “problem behind the problem” of chronic disease. “Geroscience” is the study of how the underlying processes of aging itself put us at risk to develop chronic disease. And it is on its way to modifying those processes through new medical strategies that could benefit millions. \nLiz Seegert\, AHCJ’s topic leader on aging\, will discuss this new frontier and efforts to improve the quality of those later years with Sue Peschin\, M.H.S.\, the  president and CEO of the Alliance for Aging Research. \nHow to participate\n<!– \nA link to the webcast will appear on this page about 15 minutes before it begins – you may need to refresh this page to see the link. This event is exclusively for AHCJ members so you will need your website login and password. There will be time to ask questions of the speaker after her presentation. \nAbout the speaker\nSue Peschin\, M.H.S.\, is president and CEO of the Alliance for Aging Research\, a nonprofit organization dedicated to accelerating the pace of scientific discoveries and their application to vastly improve the universal human experience of aging and health. It believes advances in research help people live longer\, happier\, more productive lives and reduce health care costs over the long term and that access to the latest scientific information empowers people to take control of their health. Peschin has more than 20 years of experience in health policy\, government relations and non-profit leadership. Previously\, she was vice president of public policy for the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America. \n\nSue Peschin \n\n\nLiz Seegert

SUMMARY:HIV and the Mental Health of LGBT People of Color
DESCRIPTION:6 p.m. on Wednesday\, Dec 2\nSee a screening of the documentary\, “You Are Not Alone\,” and a discussion\, “HIV and Mental Health of LGBT People of Color” with a distinguished panel\, moderated by Marsha Bronner of the HUGS Campaign\, and including “America’s Psychologist” Dr. Jeff Gardere\, Ariel Rojas of TransDisapora Networks\, Chris Adams\, LMSW\, Rev. Dr. Lynn Sexton\, The Griot Circle\, and Aron Cobbs\, Lambda Legal.  \nTo RSVP for this first-time Brooklyn-Borough-wide Screening\, Call: 718-802-3530 Go to: http://brooklyn-usa.org/event/world-aids-day/ \nBrooklyn Borough Hall209 Joralemon St. Brooklyn\, NY 11201 Google Map \n HIV and the Mental Health of LGBT People of Color Following the screening\, there will be a discussion of the mental health effects of an HIV infection: looking at the societal factors which lead to a person contracting HIV\, the effects of the virus on an infected person’s neuropsyhcology\, and once again\, an infected person’s family\, friends\, and community’s response to being a LGBT person of color and HIV positive. The panel discussion will be moderated by Marsha Bronner\, Founder of the HUGS Campaign\, with panelists including\, “America’s Psychologist” Jeffery Gardere\, Ph.D.; Ariel Rojas MS MA\, CEO of TransDisapora Networks; Chris Adams\, LMSW\, DBGM\, Inc.; Rev. Dr. Lynn Sexton\, The Griot Circle; and Aron Cobbs\, Lambda Legal. \n About You Are Not Alone – the documentary As a 65-minute documentary\, “You Are Not Alone” examines many underlying psycho-social factors that lead to and cause depression in Black gay men. It looks closely at the struggles with sexual orientation and identity; being  sexually abused by an older adult family member/relative/familiar or authority figure; pastors and imams declaring that a gay man is an abomination and encouraging ostracism from families and communities; the descent into feelings of low self-esteem and setting out to contract HIV as a form of suicide with the ensuing stigma and discrimination accompanying the diagnosis; and for many aging Black gay men\, struggles with loneliness\, isolation and abandonment\, including desperation for affection\, intimacy and sex.  In interviews with Black gay men of varying ages\, opinions from mental health professionals and religious leaders\, and re-enactments of experiences the documentary explores the reasons for a Black gay man’s downward spiral into depression and suicide. \nYou Are Not Alone\, through interviews\, traces the lives of at least three Black gay men with re-enactments of their life experiences: Cedric\, who as a child was abused by his father on the suspicion of being gay; Lawrence\, recounted being sexually abused by his father; and\, Tony tells of never feeling as though he belonged\, as he said\, ‘I was always a shade off happy’. Then there is the mother\, whose 14-year-old son was bullied in school and hanged himself with a dog leash\, as she said\, ‘Losing my only child was a tragedy of tragedies.”  \nThe film also contains interviews with mental health professionals\, including “America’s Psychologist” Jeffery Gardere\, Ph.D.\, Dr. Kim Arrington\, and NY City-based psychiatrist Michael Myers\, MD\, who present their professional opinions on the experiences recounted in the stories.
