SUMMARY:Webcast: Crisis in Americas Emergency Rooms
DESCRIPTION:Presented by the Association of Health Care Journalists and the Kaiser Family Foundation \nThe webcast\, podcast and transcript is available. \nHospital emergency rooms are under siege. Some inner city hospitals are losing on-call specialists to treat severely injured patients or must pay high prices to keep them. In some parts of the country\, ambulance diversions are continuing. So are wallet biopsies which telegraph to hospitals who can pay and who cannot. Changes to Medicaid mandated by the Deficit Reduction Act could affect the care those on Medicaid will receive. Technology and emergency room care will become more expensive\, raising the question: “Who will fund this place of last resort as the move to market-driven health care rushes ahead? “ \nPanelists:\n\n\n Carmela Coyle\, senior vice president for policy\, American Hospital Association \n\n\n Nicole Lurie\, M.D.\, senior natural scientist and the Paul O’ Neill Alcoa Professor of Policy Analysis at RAND. \n\n\n Brent Asplin\, M.D.\, head of emergency medicine at Regions Hospital in St. Paul\, Minn.\, and is vice chairman of the emergency medicine department at the University of Minnesota. \n\n\n Moderator: Trudy Lieberman\, director of Center for Consumer Health Choices at Consumers Union and president of AHCJ board of directors. \n\n\n

SUMMARY:Webcast: Reporting on Health Savings Accounts
DESCRIPTION:This roundtable — a partnership between the Association of Health Care Journalists and the Kaiser Family Foundation — focuses on health savings accounts and related approaches advocated by the Bush Administration and others to address rising health care costs and lack of coverage for the uninsured. Among the questions our experts will address are: How do these accounts really work? What are the differences among the types of accounts being offered? Who will benefit from them? Who won't? What effect are they likely to have on the insurance market? Will they really curb the rising cost of health care? Will they lower the number of uninsured? \nSee a webcast of the event or get a transcript. \nModerator: \n\nTrudy Lieberman\, director\, Center for Consumer Health Choices\, Consumers Union and president\, AHCJ\n\nPanelists: \n\nGary Claxton\, vice president\, Kaiser Family Foundation and director\, Health Care Marketplace Project\nMila Kofman\, assistant research professor\, Health Policy Institute\, Georgetown University\nDoug Kronenberg\, chief strategy officer\, Lumenos
