SUMMARY:Chicago AHCJ Chapter: Overtesting and overtreatment in American medicine
DESCRIPTION:With enrollment in Affordable Care Act insurance plans now at 8 million and another 4.8 million signing up for Medicaid or CHIP\, a new group of patients will be facing hard conversations with physicians and others about what care they should be receiving. \nFrom heated debates over preventive screenings such as mammograms or prostate cancer testing to wasteful use of high-cost imaging or emergency care\, the pressure will be on to rein in unnecessary\, redundant or ineffective care that’s been estimated to gobble between 20 percent to 40 percent of U.S. health spending. This will especially be the case because cost control is key to ensuring that the bill for Obamacare is\, in fact\, affordable. \nOur panel discussion will examine one widely touted effort targeting overtesting and overtreatment\, the American Board of Internal Medicine Foundation’s Choosing Wisely initiative. So far\, more than 50 medical societies have offered up more than 200 tests\, treatments and other interventions that “physicians and patients should question.” We’ll look at how well the project is going\, what kind of results it’s getting\, and whether this can indeed be a game-changer in reining in wasteful health care spending. We’ll also discuss the role that Obamacare experiments such as accountable care organizations and patient-centered medical homes may play in slashing unneeded tests and treatments. \nPanelists: \n\nDr. Holly J. Humphrey is the dean for medical education at the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine and is vice chair ABIM Foundation’s board of trustees.\nDr. Joel Shalowitz is the director of health industry management at Northwestern’s Kellogg School of Management and also professor of preventive medicine at the Feinberg School of Medicine.\nMark Newton is CEO of Swedish Covenant Hospital in Chicago’s Albany Park neighborhood. Swedish has received four consecutive “A” grades on patient safety from the Leapfrog Group\, and is taking part in accountable care activities in the Medicare and Medicaid programs.\nJulie Deardorff is an award-winning health\, medicine and fitness reporter for the Chicago Tribune.\nKevin B. O’Reilly (moderator)\, senior editor\, CAP TODAY\, published the College of American Pathologists\, and member of the Association of Health Care Journalists.\n\nTime: 6 p.m.\, refreshments7 p.m.\, program \nLocation: Columbia College Journalism Department33 East Congress\, corner of Wabash and Congress\, under the L tracksRoom 219 \nThanks to Columbia College for the venue!

SUMMARY:Beyond the Noise: Covering the Health Care Law
DESCRIPTION:The Affordable Care Act is a big\, sprawling\, complex and politically explosive piece of legislation. It will touch all aspects of the U.S. health care system\, reverberate in the economy and the workplace– and keep politicians at high decibel levels at least through the November midterms and probably beyond. \nIn this webinar\, which will take place at 2 p.m. April 23\, Politico health care editor Joanne Kenen will help you sharpen your reporting and deepen your understanding of the Affordable Care Act and its impact on your community. \nYou will learn: \n•        How to interpret the latest enrollment figures for the health exchanges and Medicaid; \n•        Some tools for analyzing and fact-checking claims both sides make about the health law; \n•        Ideas for how to blend policy and narrative; \n•        What to watch for as states prepare for year two; \n•        And the 90 percent of the law that doesn’t hit the headlines – but should. \nWho should take this course? \nIf you are a reporter or an editor on a health\, business\, or politics beats\, and you want to get beyond the heated and confusing rhetoric and understand what the health law means to your community and where it’s heading\, you should take this course. \nJoanne Kenen is AHCJ’s topic leader on health reform and the health care editor of Politico/Politico Pro. She has covered health policy and health politics\, mostly in Washington\, since 1994 and has been at Politico since 2011. \nThis $29.95 Webinar is free thanks to the support of the McCormick Foundation.

SUMMARY:NIH Health Disparities Seminar Series: Health Disparities – The Issue is Justice
DESCRIPTION:This seminar features Dr. Paula Braveman\, a professor of family and community medicine and director of the Center on Social Disparities in Health at the University of California-San Francisco. \n“Health disparities do not refer to all possible health differences\,” Braveman says\, “nor do they refer to all health differences that warrant concerted public policy attention; they are a specific subset of health differences that are relevant to social justice. Health disparities are systematic\, plausibly avoidable health differences adversely affecting socially and economically disadvantaged groups. Health disparities may reflect social disadvantage\, but their causes need not be established. They are unfair in that they place already socially disadvantaged groups at further disadvantage with respect to their health.” \nBraveman will provide an overview of the concept of health disparities and a conceptual framework for thinking about how disparities are created\, exacerbated\, and perpetuated across lifetimes and generations. \nThe seminar is 3-4:30 p.m. in the Masur Auditorium\, Natcher Conference Center\, Building 45\, 10 Center Drive\, Bethesda\, Md. \nAdditional Information: \nParking is limited on the NIH campus. The closest Metro stop is Medical Center. Please allow adequate time for a security check. The seminar will be videocast and made available in the NIH Video archives and on the NIMHD website after the seminar. Sign language interpreters will be provided. Individuals with disabilities who need reasonable accommodations to participate should contact Edgar Dews at 301-402-1366 or the Federal Relay at 1-800-877-8339.

SUMMARY:NY Chapter: Panel Discussion on Genetically Modified Foods
DESCRIPTION:The next chapter event with Science Writers in New York (SWINY) will be a panel on genetically modified organisms (GMOs).  The panel will take place 6:30-8:30 p.m. on April 9 at the New York State Health Foundation\, 23rd floor of 1385 Broadway\, between 37thand 38th streets. Refreshments will be available. \nFoods containing ingredients with genetically modified organisms (GMOs) have been dubbed Frankenfoods. They generate scary headlines. Some consumer advocates urge a GMO ban\, arguing that they’re untested\, unregulated\, and linked to potential health problems. Others insist the answer is labelling GMO foods or ingredients so that consumers can choose — and this spurs intense lobbying efforts. And yet others assert that GMO foods can be a boon. Several countries have already barred specific GMO crops. \nBut what do we really know about GMOs? Why do they cause such a firestorm of controversy? Find out at this informative\, thought-provoking discussion. \nPanelists:  \n\n\nThe Sense and Science of GMOs: Doug Gurian-Sherman\, Union of Concerned Scientists \n\n\nGMOs – The Food Industry Perspective: John Ruff\, past president\, Institute of Food Technologists \n\n\nThe Case Against GMOs: Michael Boms\, adjunct assistant professor of biology\, SUNY\, New Paltz \n\n\nThe Argument for Labeling GMO Products: Jean Halloran\, Consumers Union \n\n\nPlease contact Trudy Lieberman to RSVP. It helps to know how many to expect. If you say you are coming\, but it turns out you can’t come\, it helps to know that too.

SUMMARY:Clinical and Economic Outcomes of Nutrition Interventions Across the Continuum of Care
