SUMMARY:Webinar: The Health Care Revolution No One's Talking About: Changing How We Pay for Care
DESCRIPTION:Health insurers and the federal Medicare program are seeking the best ways to pay providers based on value and performance rather than on the volume of services they deliver. Medicare recently announced a shift that could bend the health care cost curve by moving away from fee-for-service payment. \nHealth economist Austin Frakt of The New York Times’ column The Upshot; Arnold Milstein\, M.D.\, Stanford’s School of Medicine; and Jordan Rau of Kaiser Health News will explain the challenges the federal government faces in trying to slow the rate of growth in health costs. Included in the discussion will be how can journalists find compelling human stories amid these trends. \nThis free webinar is sponsored by USC Annenberg/California Endowment Health Journalism Fellowships and the National Institute for Health Care Management Foundation. \nJournalists can register here. \nDate & time:1 p.m. – 2 p.m.\, March 19\, 2015

SUMMARY:Scientific Report of the 2015 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee (DGAC)
DESCRIPTION:The Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health will host a special web event Feb. 25. Viewers will learn about the new scientific report from the U.S. Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee (DGAC)\, released last week. The report will help inform updates to U.S. dietary guidelines\, but it has left some consumers confused. \nThe widely reported results have caused some people to wonder exactly what changes the committee is recommending – but more importantly\, why? You may have heard reports that now “eggs are OK to eat” or “high sugar diets are just as bad for you as high saturated fat diets.” By hearing directly from the scientists involved in putting together this report\, this event will help you understand how to eat a healthier diet using the latest scientific information.  \nPresenters include Dr. Barbara Millen\, chairperson of the DGAC and additional members of the DGAC\, including Frank Hu\, professor of nutrition and epidemiology at Harvard Chan School.  \nLearn more about the event.  \nView webcast here.  \nRead a copy of the report. \nSubmit questions for the presenters. \nDate & time: February 25\, 20153:30 – 6:00 p.m.

SUMMARY:End of special enrollment period on HealthCare.gov
DESCRIPTION:Feb. 22 marks the end of the one-week “special enrollment period” for people who were trying to get covered through HealthCare.Gov and either faced technical problems (there was a data glitch involving income verification one day before the deadline) or faced very long waits though the call center in the last three days of the regular enrollment period. Most states running their own exchanges have similar SEPs\, and a few hit by this year’s heavy snows extended enrollment briefly.

SUMMARY:Webcast: Race\, criminal justice and health
DESCRIPTION:The focus on racial injustice in the U.S. – particularly the effect of race on criminal justice – has been in the public spotlight following the tragic deaths of Michael Brown in Ferguson\, Eric Garner on Staten Island\, and Tamir Rice in Cleveland during encounters with law enforcement. While these inequities play out in numerous areas\, health and well-being is one sector in which minority groups are dramatically and disproportionally affected. \nThis Forum event will examine how disparities within the law and the criminal justice system negatively affect health\, as well as how the role of race interacts with neighborhood environments\, educational and employment opportunities\, public policy\, and other factors to lead to poorer health.      \nE-mail questions for the expert participants before the live webcast to theforum@hsph.harvard.edu. Or Tweet them to@ForumHSPH using #HealthAndRace. We’ll also conduct a live chat on The Forum’s Race\, Criminal Justice and Health web page. The Forum will accommodate as many questions as we can during a limited Q&A. SUMMARY:New Institute of Medicine report: Guidelines for Responsible Sharing of Clinical Trial Data
DESCRIPTION:Clinical trials are studies that help determine whether new health interventions – such as drugs\, other therapies\, and vaccines – are safe and effective for patients and the public. Vast amounts of data are generated over the course of a clinical trial; however\, a large portion is never published in peer-reviewed journals. Data sharing can advance new discoveries and improve clinical care\, but at the same time\, sharing clinical trial data presents risks\, burdens\, and challenges\, including protecting the privacy and consent of clinical trial participants. A new report from the Institute of Medicine provides recommended guidelines about what data should be shared at key times in a clinical trial. \nAdvance copies will be available to reporters only beginning at noon EST Tuesday\, Jan. 13. The report is embargoed and not for public release before 1 p.m. EST Wednesday\, Jan. 14. To obtain a copy\, reporters should contact the National Academies’ Office of News and Public Information; tel. 202-334-2138 or e-mail news@nas.edu. \nMembers of the authoring committee will present the report’s findings and recommendations at a public briefing beginning at 1 p.m. EST Wednesday\, Jan. 14\, at the National Academy of Sciences building\, 2101 Constitution Ave.\, N.W.\, Washington\, D.C.   \nThose who cannot attend in person may view a live webcast of the event. \n
