SUMMARY:Racism: The Silent Partner in High School Dropout and Health Disparities
DESCRIPTION:Across the U.S.\, more than 50 million students will attend public elementary and high schools this fall. Yet only two-thirds of African American and less than three-quarters of Latino students will graduate on time. Also\, more than half of all students attending public school live in poverty. \nBarriers to high school graduation are a key public health concern because high school graduation is a leading indicator of healthy adult behaviors and health status. \nAmerican Public Health AssociationPast President Adewale Troutman\, MD\, MPH\, CPH\, former health director for the City of Louisville\, will lead this timely discussion on the significance of high school graduation to health disparities. And Robert Murphy\, former teacher\, assistant principal and dropout prevention specialist for the Maryland Department of Education\, will examine how current policies and practices in educational systems disproportionately impact students of color and ultimately contribute to disproportionate dropout rates. Join public health leaders as they examine their role in providing the leadership to improve high school graduation rates and dismantling the policies and practices that undermine educational success and health. \n\n\nSept. 1\, 2-3 p.m. ET \n\n\nRegister here.

SUMMARY:Making Information Available on Outpatient Surgery in California
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, July 29; Noon-1:30 p.m.\nSheraton Grand\, Gardenia Ballroom 1230 J Street Sacramento\, CA 95814 \nThousands of Californians use outpatient surgery centers for colonoscopies\, arthroscopies\, eye surgeries\, cosmetic and plastic surgeries\, endoscopies\, biopsies\, and other procedures. SUMMARY:Health Literacy and Palliative Care
DESCRIPTION:On July 9\, 2015\, the Roundtable on Health Literacy will hold a workshop featuring invited presentations and discussions of the effect of low health literacy on all aspects of palliative care. In general\, low health literacy is a barrier to receiving high quality health care. This is particularly important for people living with serious or chronic illnesses that require complex management regimens and have significant symptoms or treatments with significant side effects. The ability to understand the scope of the illness\, what is necessary to treat the illness\, and how to live with serious illness as comfortably as possible is crucial to patient treatment outcomes and quality of life. \nThe workshop will cover end-of-life and advance illness care models and other areas of interest within palliative care. It will also include the interaction between patients\, families\, and providers\, as well as the knowledge of palliative care and its principles among providers. \nThe meeting will run from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. \nRegistration to attend the workshop in-person or via webcast is now open.
