SUMMARY:Medical Tests: Inaccuracies\, Risks and the Public's Health
DESCRIPTION:Webcast: Friday\, Dec. 11\, 12:30-1:30pm ET\nSend questions in advance to theforum@hsph.harvard.edu Tweet @ForumHSPH #testsforum \nWithout question\, medical testing has saved lives and bettered patient care. But what happens when tests are inaccurate or unnecessary? The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently raised alarms about a growing class of tests designed and used in single laboratories\, which are far less subject to regulatory enforcement than commercial test kits sold to multiple labs. The agency reviewed 20 case studies involving lab-developed tests (LDTs) and found evidence of patients at risk for medically unnecessary procedures\, including mastectomies\, or for potentially inappropriate therapies\, including cancer treatments. Some tests may fail to detect a condition\, while others may erroneously point to a non-existent problem. The medical costs are significant. The Obama administration is calling for a new regulatory framework as well. \nLDTs are not the only source of concern. A 2013 meta-analysis involving commonly ordered lab tests found that 30 percent\, on average\, were probably unnecessary and\, conversely\, a similar number should have been ordered and were not. \nScrutiny of lab testing is intensifying as the medical community grapples to address diagnostic errors. This year\, the Institute of Medicine issued a study\, Improving Diagnosis in Health Care\, as a continuation of an earlier series of patient safety reports. Pointing to many factors in diagnostic errors\, the recent report states that “most people will experience at least one diagnostic error in their lifetime\, sometimes with devastating consequences.” \nThis Forum will examine the role of medical tests in health care\, looking both at their considerable benefits and risks and asking how to ensure their accuracy\, safety and reliability. \nModerator: Sharon Begley\, Senior Science Writer\, STAT \nExpert Participants: \n\n\nAaron Kesselheim\, Director\, Program on Regulation\, Therapeutics\, and Law\, Brigham and Women’s Hospital \n\n\nLucian Leape\, Chair\, Lucian Leape Institute at the National Patient Safety Foundation\, and Adjunct Professor of Health Policy\, Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health \n\n\nAlberto Gutierrez\, Director\, Office of In Vitro Diagnostics and Radiological Health\, Center of Devices and Radiological Health\, Food and Drug Administration \n\n\nRamy Arnaout\, Associate Director of the Clinical Microbiology Laboratories at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center \n\n\nPresented in Collaboration with Stat \n

Dr. Lynn Sexton\, The Griot Circle\, and Aron Cobbs\, Lambda Legal.  \nTo RSVP for this first-time Brooklyn-Borough-wide Screening\, Call: 718-802-3530 Go to: http://brooklyn-usa.org/event/world-aids-day/ \nBrooklyn Borough Hall209 Joralemon St. Brooklyn\, NY 11201 Google Map \n HIV and the Mental Health of LGBT People of Color Following the screening\, there will be a discussion of the mental health effects of an HIV infection: looking at the societal factors which lead to a person contracting HIV\, the effects of the virus on an infected person’s neuropsyhcology\, and once again\, an infected person’s family\, friends\, and community’s response to being a LGBT person of color and HIV positive. The panel discussion will be moderated by Marsha Bronner\, Founder of the HUGS Campaign\, with panelists including\, “America’s Psychologist” Jeffery Gardere\, Ph.D.; Ariel Rojas MS MA\, CEO of TransDisapora Networks; Chris Adams\, LMSW\, DBGM\, Inc.; Rev. Dr. Lynn Sexton\, The Griot Circle; and Aron Cobbs\, Lambda Legal. \n About You Are Not Alone – the documentary As a 65-minute documentary\, “You Are Not Alone” examines many underlying psycho-social factors that lead to and cause depression in Black gay men. It looks closely at the struggles with sexual orientation and identity; being  sexually abused by an older adult family member/relative/familiar or authority figure; pastors and imams declaring that a gay man is an abomination and encouraging ostracism from families and communities; the descent into feelings of low self-esteem and setting out to contract HIV as a form of suicide with the ensuing stigma and discrimination accompanying the diagnosis; and for many aging Black gay men\, struggles with loneliness\, isolation and abandonment\, including desperation for affection\, intimacy and sex.  In interviews with Black gay men of varying ages\, opinions from mental health professionals and religious leaders\, and re-enactments of experiences the documentary explores the reasons for a Black gay man’s downward spiral into depression and suicide. \nYou Are Not Alone\, through interviews\, traces the lives of at least three Black gay men with re-enactments of their life experiences: Cedric\, who as a child was abused by his father on the suspicion of being gay; Lawrence\, recounted being sexually abused by his father; and\, Tony tells of never feeling as though he belonged\, as he said\, ‘I was always a shade off happy’. Then there is the mother\, whose 14-year-old son was bullied in school and hanged himself with a dog leash\, as she said\, ‘Losing my only child was a tragedy of tragedies.”  \nThe film also contains interviews with mental health professionals\, including “America’s Psychologist” Jeffery Gardere\, Ph.D.\, Dr. Kim Arrington\, and NY City-based psychiatrist Michael Myers\, MD\, who present their professional opinions on the experiences recounted in the stories.

DESCRIPTION:Mathematica /Center on Health Care Effectiveness webinar\nOver the past two decades\, hospitals have acquired an increasing number of physician practices.. This event looks at the reasons and the effect on cost and quality. A growing body of research suggests that these arrangements do not necessarily improve care coordination – and they do push up costs. How can policymakers shift the focus to high value? \nFrom 11:45 am to 1:30 pm. Register to attend in person or for the webinar. \nFor more information email chce@mathematica-mpr.com

SUMMARY:Drug Pricing: Public Health Implications
DESCRIPTION:Live webcast\, Oct. 23\, 12:30-1:30 p.m. ET | Watch at ForumHSPH.org\nA full course of treatment with the blockbuster Hepatitis C drug Sovaldi costs $84\,000 in the United States. A year on the new injectable cholesterol drugs Repatha and Praluent tops $14\,000. The price of new cancer drugs now averages $10\,000 per month\, according to one estimate. \nStraining under the pressure\, doctors\, patients\, and insurers are raising alarms over skyrocketing prices. Earlier this year\, the American Society of Clinical Oncology released a new “value framework” for drugs that considers health benefit and price to help guide doctor-patient conversations around treatment options. \nFor their part\, pharmaceutical companies and some economists argue that the high cost of drug development justifies the price. \nThis Forum will explore the factors driving the high cost of new drugs. What policy changes\, from the drug approval process to patent law\, could change the equation? Are some of these drugs worth the cost? And what can be done to make sure that patients can afford the medications that they need? \nParticipants  \n\n\nSteven Pearson\, President of the Institute for Clinical and Economic Review and Lecturer at Harvard Medical School \n\n\nAaron Kesselheim\, Director\, Program on Regulation\, Therapeutics\, and Law\, Brigham and Women’s Hospital\, and Associate Professor of Medicine\, Harvard Medical School \n\n\nMeredith Rosenthal\, Professor of Health Economics and Policy\, Harvard T.H. SUMMARY:Optimizing Digital to Reach Patients\, Scientists\, Clinicians\, and the Public
DESCRIPTION:The National Institutes of Health is hosting a summit to explore how digital communication is being used by government agencies\, clinicians\, scientists\, patients\, and the public to share information on health and science. \nAccording to a September 2012 Pew Research Center survey\, 72 percent of Internet users say they looked online for health information within the past year. As health information becomes increasingly accessible\, it’s important to take a look at how these resources are being communicated and shared with the public\, how and where clinicians and scientists are discussing important health topics in the digital sphere\, and the challenges health communicators face with an ever-evolving digital landscape. The summit is designed to encourage discussion and to strengthen scientific communications communities around the digital and social media strategies used in health and science agencies. \nPanel Topics: \n\n\nPanel 1: The patient and caregiver perspective: Managing health conditions using digital tools and social media. \n\n\nPanel 2: Reaching patients and the public where they are: Sharing high quality\, evidence-based information with the public on social media\, blogs\, and mobile apps. \n\n\nPanel 3: The health professional perspective: Using social media to get and share information and interact with other professionals and patients. \n\n\nPanel 4: The scientist’s perspective: Using digital and social media to collaborate\, share ideas\, and communicate research to the public. \n\n\nLipsett Amphitheater\, National Institutes of Health\, Building 10\, 10 Center Drive\, Bethesda\, MD \n Visitor information is available at http://www.nih.gov/about/visitor. \nThere are a select number of seats reserved for media. If you are interested in attending\, please email Katy Danielson at nccihpress@mail.nih.gov. If you are unable to attend in person\, the summit will be Web cast live at videocast.nih.gov. SUMMARY:International Day for the Eradication of Poverty
DESCRIPTION:Building a sustainable future: Coming together to end poverty and discrimination\nThe International Day for the Eradication of Poverty has been observed every year since 1993\, when the United Nations General Assembly\, by resolution 47/196\, designated this day to promote awareness of the need to eradicate poverty and destitution in all countries. Fighting poverty remains at the core of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and the development of the post-2015 development agenda. \nThis year\, the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty holds particular significance because it will be the first observance following the formal adoption of the Sustainable Development Goals by the General Assembly of the United Nations. Within this new development framework\, designed to replace and carry forward the aims of the Millennium Development Goals\, all countries committed to “ending poverty in all its forms and dimensions.” \n

SUMMARY:National Comprehensive Cancer Network to Unveil Oncology Value Tool
DESCRIPTION:To further empower patients to make treatment decisions in line with their values\, the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) will introduce a new infographic tool for evaluating treatment decisions [its new value initiative]—the NCCN Evidence Blocks—at a press conference at the start of the NCCN 10th Annual Congress: Hematologic Malignancies. \nThe new NCCN Guidelines with NCCN Evidence Blocks enable physicians and patients to speak the same language of choice and value. Robert W. Carlson\, MD\, Chief Executive Officer\, NCCN\, will demonstrate how the five key value considerations displayed in the NCCN Evidence Blocks—Efficacy\, Safety\, Quality and Quantity of evidence\, Consistency of evidence\, and Affordability—can be used to evaluate recommended interventions in cancer care. \nBy adding affordability to NCCN’s existing criteria of efficacy\, toxicity\, and evidence for evaluating treatment options\, patients will be empowered to identify\, alongside their physician\, optimal treatment based on clinical and economic considerations that are of most value to them. \nFollowing opening remarks\, a panel of physicians and patients will discuss the challenges and benefits presented by this new physician/patient dynamic in shared decision-making. \nWHO: \n\n\nModerator: Victoria Colliver\, Health Reporter\, San Francisco Chronicle;  Member\, Association of Health Care Journalists \n\n\nPanelists: Robert W.
