SUMMARY:Chemical Exposures and the Brain: The Flint Water Crisis and More
DESCRIPTION:Feb. 19\, Noon-1pm ET Watch at ForumHSPH.org \nThe water crisis gripping Flint\, Michigan\, has exposed thousands of children to unsafe lead levels\, triggering a federal emergency declaration and national conversation about basic public health protections. Lead can be toxic to the brain\, and children can be particularly vulnerable. However\, the Flint example is not unique; other American cities\, including the nation’s capitol\, have faced lead contamination in water supplies. And research has pointed more generally to an expanding list of chemicals\, including certain pesticides\, mercury and flame retardants\, that may be linked to cognitive delays and health conditions in children. This Forum will examine those links and the implications for both children and adults\, while exploring public policy successes and failures in safeguarding the public’s health against neurotoxicants. \n Video will be posted on-demand after the event. \n EXPERT PARTICIPANTS Philippe Grandjean\, Adjunct Professor of Environmental Health\, Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health \n Marc Weisskopf\, Associate Professor of Environmental and Occupational Epidemiology\, Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health \n Jeffrey Griffiths\, Professor of Public Health\, and Community Medicine\, Tufts University School of Medicine\, and Former Chair\, US EPA Drinking Water Committee\, Science Advisory Board \n Kimberly Gray\, Program Director\, Children’s Environmental Health\, National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences \n MODERATOR Peter Thomson\, Environment Editor\, PRI’s The World \n Send our panelists questions in advance to theforum@hsph.harvard.edu. The Forum will accommodate as many questions as we can during a limited Q&A. \n Tweet us @ForumHSPH #neurotoxins \nPresented in Collaboration with PRI’s The World & WGBHPart of the Andelot Series on Current Science Controversies

SUMMARY:Briefing for Reporters on State Health Initiatives
DESCRIPTION:WHEN: Friday\, Feb. 19\, 8:30-9:45 AM (Breakfast available at 8 a.m.)WHERE: National Press Club\, Fourth Estate (529 14th St.\, NW\, 13th Floor\, Wash.\, D.C.) RSVP: Samantha Feller sfeller@allhealth.org (202)789-2300 \n***OPEN ONLY TO MEMBERS OF THE PRESS*** \nTwo governors will meet with reporters to discuss the latest health care innovations and changes they are pursuing or implementing. \nMany states are implementing their own health initiatives\, such as tying Medicaid payment to value and integrating behavioral health and primary care. States have long used Medicaid 1115 waivers to give them flexibility to test new delivery models and benefit designs. Starting in 2017\, states can also use section 1332 waivers to bypass ACA requirements and institute their own reforms. Though\, after the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) issued guidance in December 2015\, the amount of flexibility these waivers provide is in question. \nGovernors will provide the latest on health care initiatives in their states and discuss challenges. This will include a discussion on Medicaid changes\, waiver limitations\, and budget considerations. \nGovernor Asa Hutchinson\, Republican\, Arkansas \nGovernor\, Democrat (invited) \nAlan Weil of Health Affairs and Marilyn Serafini of the Alliance for Health Reform will moderate. \nPresented by the Alliance for Health Reform\, with thanks to the The Jayne Koskinas Ted Giovanis Foundation for Health and Policy for its support of this briefing. \n

SUMMARY:Media briefing: The Zika Virus - What's Next in the U.S. and Abroad?
DESCRIPTION:The rapid spread of the Zika virus in the Latin America and the Caribbean region\, the appearances of cases of Zika in the United States\, and the association between Zika infection and serious birth defects has generated attention and concern among the public\, policymakers\, and the media. The WHO recently declared the cluster of birth defects associated with the virus represents a public health emergency of international concern.  This week\, President Obama requested $1.8 billion in funding from Congress to combat the virus at home and abroad. \nWhat have scientists and researchers discovered about the health consequences of the virus? How are Zika-affected countries responding to its spread and what more can be done? What challenge does Zika present for women in countries that have limited contraceptive and reproductive health care access? What impact could Zika have in the United States? How can the U.S. contribute to the global response? \nTo address these and other questions\, the Kaiser Family Foundation will hold an interactive web briefing exclusively for journalists on Wednesday\, February 17\, at 12:30 p.m. ET.  \nQuestions? Contact Katie Smith at katies@kff.org or visit kff.org.
