SUMMARY:National Association of Health Data Organizations' Post-Election Town Hall Session
DESCRIPTION:This election brings with it significant changes\, likely more sweeping than we’ve experienced in our careers\, if not lifetimes. The new administration is likely to roll back provisions of the ACA and redefine the role of government in health\, creating uncertainty but perhaps also opportunities. \nThe National Association of Health Data Organizations predicts that state health care data programs will play a key role in the system transformation\, but that states and data agencies should prepare to respond to a dynamic\, and even chaotic\, environment. \nWhat are the implications for the state health data agencies and the public health care databases? How can we (or should we)\, as a community of practice\, respond? \nJoin a webinar on Dec 7 at noon MST. \nAfter registering at https://attendee.gotowebinar.com/register/2544016298194761987 you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the webinar.

SUMMARY:The Chronic Pain Epidemic: What's to Be Done?
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, Nov. 10\, 2016 \n12:30-1:30 p.m. ET \n\n\n11 a.m. ET – a brief pre-event Q&A with panelist Vaughan Rees and moderator David Freeman. \n\n\n12:30 p.m. ET – the full one-hour panel discussion \n\n\nMore than 100 million Americans struggle with chronic pain\, according to one Institute of Medicine estimate\, at an annual cost of as much as $635 billion in treatment and lost productivity. Further\, the misuse of potent opioid painkillers\, while increasing risk of addiction and abuse\, can confuse the conversation around appropriate chronic pain management. This Forum brings together a panel of experts to discuss the causes\, treatment and impact of chronic pain\, while exploring the neuroscience behind the pain experience. The panelists will examine how clinicians can best serve their patients\, highlighting the recommendations of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ recent National Pain Strategy. The Forum will look at myriad pain management options\, including marijuana and mindfulness meditation. And panelists will examine relevant pain care policies\, including prescription monitoring program regulations\, drug development and funding for research. \nPresented by The Forum at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health jointly with The Huffington Post. \nExpert Participants \n\n\nJosephine Briggs\, Director\, National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health\, NIH \n\n\nAnne Louise Oaklander\, Associate Professor of Neurology\, Harvard Medical School\, and an attending neurologist\, Massachusetts General Hospital \n\n\nVaughan Rees\, addiction specialist and Lecturer on Social and Behavioral Sciences\, Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health \n\n\nCindy Steinberg\, National Director of Policy and Advocacy\, U.S. Pain Foundation; Member\, Interagency Pain Research Coordinating Committee\, NIH; and Policy Council Chair\, Massachusetts Pain Initiative \n\n\nModerator \n\n\nDavid Freeman\, Managing Editor\, Impact & Innovation\, The Huffington Post \n\n\nWatch the webcast:\nForumHSPH.org. Send questions in advance to theforum@hsph.harvard.edu. SUMMARY:How to Supercharge Your HealthCare Value Work with State-Level Data
DESCRIPTION:Robust data can provide insights into everything from health care cost drivers to health disparities. Innovative states and organizations are already harnessing the power of data to inform practice and policy choices that lower spending and improve quality of care. National data trends often make the news but what resources are easily and readily available for advocates to use at the state level? \nThis free webinar will explore available state-level data sources and how advocates\, policymakers and others can use data to supercharge their efforts to improve health care value for consumers. At the end of the webinar\, the Healthcare Value Hub will release a comprehensive guide to currently available resources. \nSpeaker: Lynn Quincy\, director\, Healthcare Value Hub \nRegister here.

SUMMARY:Research Summit on Improving Diagnosis in Health Care
DESCRIPTION:Sept. 288:30 a.m. – 5 p.m. \nMost patients will experience at least one diagnostic error in their lifetime\, according to the AHRQ-sponsored report\, Improving Diagnosis in Health Care\, published by the National Academies of Medicine in September 2015. These errors occur in all settings of care\, contribute to about 10 percent of patient deaths\, and are the primary reason for medical liability claims. Substantial effort is needed to identify research priorities\, including how to measure and reduce diagnostic errors\, and ensure this information is integrated into practice\, where it will translate meaningful benefits for patients. This interactive meeting will explore the state of the science of diagnosis in health care and discuss ways AHRQ and other stakeholders can contribute to a collaborative approach to improving diagnostic performance\, as well as identify the research and evidence\, tools and training\, and data and measures that are needed to improve diagnostic performance.   \nThe Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality hosts a Research Summit on Improving Diagnosis in Health Care – focusing on reducing diagnostic errors. In person space is quite limited but there’s a webcast (you need to register for it here. More detail about the conference and agenda here.

SUMMARY:What's next for EHRs?
DESCRIPTION:What do we want from electronic health records? Well\, it all depends on who you ask. If you ask health care providers — doctors\, nurses\, and other providers — be prepared: they often have long lists of frustrations with the very tools that promised to make taking care of patients a lot more reliable\, safe\, and efficient. Patients often have a difficult time navigating new online portals\, too. \nThat’s not to say EHRs haven’t made many things better\, and there’s certainly no going back. But what about fixing those daily headaches and workarounds with EHRs we’re now hearing so much about\, and designing or redesigning the technology so it better matches what health care practitioners and patients need? Is the vendor community listening? We’re going to find out. \nLaurance Stuntz has the vantage point of having worked on the HIT product development side for many years before starting to help providers in Massachusetts adopt EHRs\, his current role in a statewide initiative. \nAnd IHI’s Jill Duncan will explain how a group of leading health care organizations collaborated on developing a robust list of recommendations to discuss with government officials and some of the nation’s top EHR vendors. Will health care leaders be able to influence the next wave of EHR innovations? What will make it possible? \nFree audio program; enrollment required. 2-3 p.m. ET \n
