SUMMARY:Older Adults and Health Care Decision-Making in Clinical Settings
DESCRIPTION:When older adults lack the capacity to make important health care decisions for themselves and have nothing in writing naming a person to make decisions for them\, how can the right health care decisions be made in clinical settings? Over the past 40 years\, nearly every state has passed statutes on health care decision-making. The laws vary from state-to-state\, from authorizing living wills or powers of attorney for health care to defining the conditions when withholding or withdrawing life sustaining care is permitted for patients who lack capacity.  \nDespite years of legal guidance\, questions remain regarding the statutory applicability in clinical practice. In 2016\, the American Bar Association Commission on Law and Aging (ABA COLA) initiated a national survey to explore health care clinicians’ perspectives on questions regarding capacity and decision-making. Findings explore instances when the law and clinical practice clearly align\, when there are consultation differences between lawyers and clinical providers\, and outline the areas that still present the greatest challenges for health care decision making in clinical settings.  \nIn this webinar\, David Godfrey\, Senior Attorney to the ABA COLA\, will detail the survey findings and implications for the health and aging network working with older adults with diminished capacity. The webinar will be accompanied by an Issue Brief that highlights the survey findings and provides recommendations for the field.  \nPresenter: David Godfrey\, Senior Attorney\, American Bar Association Commission on Law and Aging

SUMMARY:CityHealth ratings set for release
DESCRIPTION:CityHealth\, a project of the de Beaumont Foundation\, will release its first round of city policy ratings\, a culmination of a two-year study of best policy practices with its roots in evidence and its eyes on change. In December\, CityHealth announced its new package of nine proven\, attainable policies that will help millions of people live longer\, better lives in vibrant\, prosperous communities. \nCityHealth will score cities on the number and strength of the nine policies identified by a panel of experts. Each of the examined cities will be assigned a medal status – Gold\, Silver\, Bronze\, or none based on that evaluation. \nThe nine policy solutions are:  \nEmployment benefits: Earned sick leave policies require employers to provide paid leave to workers for their own\, and sometimes their family members’ illness. Earned sick leave protects peoples’ jobs and economic security\, keeps adults and kids healthy and prevents the spread of disease. \nEducation: Universal\, high-quality pre-kindergarten helps ensure that young children are better prepared to enter Kindergarten ready to learn. Among its many benefits\, high quality pre-k has been shown to boost high school graduation rates\, reduce referrals to special education and help kids get screened for health concerns.  \nAffordable housing: Inclusionary zoning policies set aside a percentage of affordable apartments or condos in newly built developments. These policies help people afford to live and work in their communities\, boosting their economic security and quality of life. \nActive living/transportation: Complete streets policies help make sure city residents can travel safely throughout their community—whether they go by foot\, bike\, public transit or car. \nPublic safety: Zoning regulations on alcohol outlet density help control the number of places in a neighborhood that sell alcohol. Extensive evidence links alcohol use to crime and violence\, from homicide to rape to car accidents—and the more places that sell alcohol in a neighborhood\, the higher likelihood of these incidents. \nTobacco control: Tobacco 21 policies set the minimum age to purchase tobacco products at 21. By curbing tobacco use among young adults\, these policies have been shown to decrease the number of people who start — and continue — smoking. \nEnvironment: Comprehensive smoking bans keep tobacco out of workplaces\, restaurants\, bars\, and other places where people gather. They help curb the number of people who use tobacco\, and dramatically cut exposure to toxic secondhand smoke. \nFood Safety: Restaurant grading policies require all restaurants to publicly display the results of their food inspections. When done right\, they help prevent the spread of foodborne illness and costly outbreaks. \nNutrition: Healthy procurement policies set smart nutrition standards for all foods served and sold on city property\, from vending machines\, concessions and cafeterias to city-run nursing homes and jails. They make sure healthy options are available\, whether people are eating some or all of their food on city property.  \nThe 40 cities by population size that CityHealth will score and for which ratings will be announced in February\, include: \n\n\nNew York City\n\n\nLos Angeles\n\n\nChicago\n\n\nHouston\n\n\nPhiladelphia\n\n\nPhoenix\n\n\nSan Antonio\n\n\nSan Diego\n\n\nDallas\n\n\nSan Jose\n\n\nAustin\n\n\nJacksonville\n\n\nSan Francisco\n\n\nIndianapolis\n\n\nColumbus\n\n\nFort Worth\n\n\nCharlotte\n\n\nSeattle\n\n\nDenver\n\n\nEl Paso\n\n\nDetroit\n\n\nWashington\, DC\n\n\nBoston\n\n\nMemphis\n\n\nNashville\n\n\nPortland\, OR\n\n\nOklahoma City\n\n\nLas Vegas\n\n\nBaltimore\n\n\nLouisville\n\n\nMilwaukee\n\n\nAlbuquerque\n\n\nTucson\n\n\nFresno\n\n\nSacramento\n\n\nKansas City\n\n\nLong Beach\n\n\nMesa\n\n\nAtlanta\n\n\nVirginia Beach\n\n\nCityHealth\, an initiative of the de Beaumont Foundation\, provides leaders with a package of proven\, attainable policy solutions that will help millions of people live longer\, better lives in vibrant\, prosperous communities. CityHealth will regularly evaluate cities on the number and strength of the policies they put into place. \nThe de Beaumont Foundation is dedicated to improving the capacity and performance of US public health system\, and to equipping public health agencies to thrive in a transforming health landscape. In so doing\, we aspire to improve the health of the populations of the communities they serve across the US. \nLearn more at www.cityhealth.org.

SUMMARY:Web Briefing for Journalists: Repealing and Replacing Obamacare
DESCRIPTION:With passage of budget resolutions in the House and Senate\, Congressional efforts to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act are underway. Key issues for Republicans in Congress and the Trump Administration have emerged around how quickly to move forward with partial repeal of the ACA through a budget reconciliation measure and whether replacement proposals should be considered simultaneous with a repeal debate. A variety of Congressional repeal proposals have been floated – including one by Rep. Tom Price\, President-elect Trump’s nominee for Secretary of Health and Human Services — but none have yet come up for a vote. \nOn Jan. 25 at 12:30 p.m. ET\, the Kaiser Family Foundation will host a web briefing for journalists to answer questions and sort through possible scenarios for repealing and replacing the ACA\, including implications for coverage\, the insurance market\, the Medicaid program\, and women’s health. \n\n\nLarry Levitt\, senior vice president for special initiatives and co-executive director of the Foundation’s Program for the Study of Health Reform and Private Insurance \n\n\nUsha Ranji\, the Foundation’s associate director for women’s health policy \n\n\nDiane Rowland\, the Foundation’s executive vice president \n\n\nRakesh Singh\, the Foundation’s vice president for communications\, will moderate. \n\n\n

SUMMARY:National Association of Health Data Organizations' Post-Election Town Hall Session
DESCRIPTION:This election brings with it significant changes\, likely more sweeping than we’ve experienced in our careers\, if not lifetimes. The new administration is likely to roll back provisions of the ACA and redefine the role of government in health\, creating uncertainty but perhaps also opportunities. \nThe National Association of Health Data Organizations predicts that state health care data programs will play a key role in the system transformation\, but that states and data agencies should prepare to respond to a dynamic\, and even chaotic\, environment. \nWhat are the implications for the state health data agencies and the public health care databases? How can we (or should we)\, as a community of practice\, respond? \nJoin a webinar on Dec 7 at noon MST. \nAfter registering at https://attendee.gotowebinar.com/register/2544016298194761987 you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the webinar.
