SUMMARY:Briefing: California’s Response to the Opioid Epidemic
DESCRIPTION:The opioid epidemic is the worst drug crisis in American history. More than 33\,000 people died of an opioid overdose in 2015 – an almost three-fold increase from 2002. Nearly 2\,000 of those deaths were in California. \nGovernment\, health care providers\, health plans\, law enforcement\, and many others throughout California have been working to respond to the crisis at the local and state levels. Even though there is still much work to be done\, California is starting to see some early successes. While the national death rate continues to climb\, in California it remains stable. California’s Opioid Overdose Surveillance Dashboard shows that opioid prescribing is down and access to effective addiction treatment is increasing. \nThis event will examine the role of state agencies in combating the epidemic. Participants will hear about different collaborative approaches\, including promoting safer prescribing practices\, expanding access to medication-assisted treatment for addiction\, improving communication between prescribers and providers\, among others. \nPlease join the California Health Care Foundation (CHCF) for this briefing on Nov. 27 at noon at the Department of Health Care Services (DHCS)  Auditorium in Sacramento. Speakers will include: \n\n\nJennifer Kent\, director\, DHCS \n\n\nLance Lang\, MD\, chief medical officer\, Covered California \n\n\nMelanie Fontes Rainer\, JD\, special assistant attorney general\, California Department of Justice \n\n\nKaren Smith\, MD\, director\, California Department of Public Health \n\n\nModerator: Kelly Pfeifer\, MD\, director\, High-Value Care\, CHCF

SUMMARY:Technology for Precision Health
DESCRIPTION:Precision Medicine has come a long way in the last 10 years thanks to advances in diagnostics\, computing\, and consumer tools. The ongoing quest to better understand disease predisposition and prevention through genomic and environmental factors is key to increasing the quality and length of life. Technology for Precision Health will explore how technology can help. \nHow can we think differently about gathering\, analyzing and sharing information? Which incentives can be offered to structurally change the system toward longer term care of patients? Which mechanisms will empower patients with their data and create virtuous partnerships with providers to truly drive value? Conference delegates will learn about the latest tools in Precision Medicine and Health as well as be part of the discussion on new ontologies and policy changes needed to bring these technologies to patients.
