SUMMARY:Healthy Returns: Investing in Health Care Innovation
DESCRIPTION:CNBC is launching a new conference called Healthy Returns: Investing in Health Care Innovation. This event will take place on March 28\, 2018\, in New York City in an effort that includes an advisory board to help guide its editorial efforts. The event will be coupled with TV and digital content before\, during and after the conference. \nWhy Healthy Returns? Health care spending in the United States accounts for about 18 percent of our GDP\, reaching $3.2 trillion in 2015\, or $9\,990 for every man\, woman and child. There has certainly been no shortage of news coverage about the debate in Washington over the ACA/Obamacare\, but Healthy Returns is not solely focused on policy or politics. Rather\, this will focus on the business of health care\, includinig innovations and investment opportunities. \nBiotech\, pharmaceutical and insurance companies\, and those who invest in them\, face unique challenges. From an uncertain regulatory environment to the exigencies of clinical trials\, this is an industry rife with risk. But along with that risk\, of course\, is the possibility for big rewards\, both clinically and financially. This is an extraordinary moment as precision medicine\, gene editing and new approaches to immunotherapy\, coupled with ever-increasing computing power\, begin to lead to therapies that just a few years ago seemed totally out of reach. \nSilicon Valley is now getting into the act\, too\, as Google\, Apple and Amazon circle. Big tech and well-funded start-ups are seeking to revolutionize everything from how we monitor and measure our health (wearables) to how we deliver treatment (surgical robots and “smart” pills). What’s clear is that health care is going through a period of rapid and significant medical and technological transformation. \nThe Healthy Returns advisory board will help guide efforts in covering this transformation. Among those on the board: entrepreneurs such as Anne Wojcicki\, founder and CEO of 23andMe\, the hot genetic testing and analysis service; philanthropists such as Sean Parker\, founder of Napster and founding president of Facebook who is now chairman of the Parker Institute for Cancer Immunotherapy\, and Gates Foundation CEO Susan Desmond-Hellmann; leading medical technologists such as Dr. Eric Topol\, one of the country’s leading voices on the use of genomics to drive transformative research; and top investors and executives such as Fred Hassan\, special limited partner at Warburg Pincus and former CEO of Schering-Plough.  \nLEARN MORE

SUMMARY:Will Value-based Care Save the Health Care System?
DESCRIPTION:Value-based health care is one of the most pressing topics in health care finance and policy today. Value-based payment structures are widely touted as critical to controlling runaway health care costs\, but are often difficult for health care entities to incorporate into their existing infrastructures. Because value-based health care initiatives have bipartisan support\, it is likely that these programs will continue to play a major role in both the public and private health insurance systems. As such\, there is a pressing need to evaluate the implementation of these initiatives thus far and to discuss the direction that American health care financing will take in the coming years. \nTo explore this important issue\, the Petrie-Flom Center for Health Law Policy\, Biotechnology\, and Bioethics at Harvard Law School is collaborating with Ropes & Gray LLP to host a one-day conference on value-based health care. This event will bring together scholars\, health law practitioners\, and health care entities to evaluate the impact of value-based health care on the American health care system.   \n\n\nMarch 2\, 2018 9 AM – 5 PM  \n\n\nWasserstein Hall\, Milstein East ABC (2036)Harvard Law School\, 1585 Massachusetts Ave.\, Cambridge\, MA  \n\n\nRegister for this event

SUMMARY:The flu outbreak: What you need to know
DESCRIPTION: \nTuesday\, February 13\, 2018 \nNoon-1pm ET \nMore than a half million deaths each year around the world result from flu-related respiratory illnesses. This year\, flu has grabbed particular headlines\, driven by an early start to flu season and the dominance of a particularly severe flu strain\, H3N2. The flu is most dangerous to people with underlying health problems\, as well as individuals over age 65 and young children. However\, each year flu cases involving young\, otherwise apparently healthy people raise flags. In this Forum\, experts in epidemiology\, immunology\, and health policy will place this year’s flu season in context. They will explore vaccine development\, prevention and treatment and address growing concerns globally as this particularly virulent outbreak gains the potential to spread further — ultimately asking is there a better way to stop the flu? \nEXPERT PARTICIPANTS \n\n\nAlfred DeMaria\, Medical Director for the Bureau of Infectious Disease of the Massachusetts Department of Public Health \n\n\nYonatan Grad\, Assistant Professor in the Department of Immunology and Infectious Diseases\, Harvard T.H. SUMMARY:Pitt Presents: ”˜Responsible Reporting of Gun Violence’ Symposium
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by the University of Pittsburgh\, this symposium will bring together experts in mental health\, violence prevention\, public health\, law enforcement and media studies to examine ways to report gun violence to the public responsibly. SUMMARY:Will the Real Cost Drivers Please Stand Up?
DESCRIPTION:High health care spending is a top concern for policymakers\, advocates and consumers alike. But what is driving our ever-increasing spending? New research provides details about the relative importance of various cost drivers (e.g.\, unit prices\, disease prevalence and intensity\, obesity\, etc.)\, both overall and within patient diagnoses groups (e.g.\, diabetes or heart disease). This research identifies the cost drivers that matter most and actionable information we can use to tackle our high health care spending trend. \nSpeakers:  \n\n\nJoseph Dielman\, Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation\, University of Washington \n\n\nLarry Levitt\, Kaiser Family Foundation \n\n\nLynn Quincy\, Healthcare Value Hub (moderator) \n\n\nRegister here. \n

SUMMARY:SciCommSouth
DESCRIPTION:The South Central States (Texas\, New Mexico\, Oklahoma\, Arkansas\, and Louisiana) are located where scientific innovation\, fragile biomes\, and the dynamic energy\, biotech\, and biomedical industries all meet political conservatism. The issues facing a science communicator in the region couldn’t be more diverse or important. \nDespite their unique geographic and political position\, the science communicators in the region are only loosely connected to each other\, if at all. We recognize the power of strong connections among science communicators\, not just for professional development\, but for moral support in what may be a more challenging era for science than in the past. \nHighlights\n\n\nKeynote by David Biello\, Science Curator of the TED Conferences \n\n\nBreakout sessions to facilitate networking and collaboration among previously-disparate science communicators. \n\n\nThe Art of Science Slideshow: Do you have a stunning visual that illustrates one of your science stories?
