SUMMARY:World Hepatitis Day
DESCRIPTION:World Hepatitis Day is an effort from Hepatitis Foundation International (HFI) aimed at reducing the incidence of preventable liver-related chronic diseases and lifestyles that negatively impact the liver. The burden of chronic hepatitis C virus infection in elderly persons is expected to increase significantly in the United States during the next two decades. Chronic infection is prevalent in elderly patients and may be more severe than in younger adults. As middle aged patients with HIV infection become elderly\, the number of individuals with liver disease related to chronic hepatitis C will grow\, according to the Hepatitis C Association. Other forms of the disease\, including Hepatitis A and B\, are also more severe in older adults. This article from the The American Journal of Gastroenterology provides a good overview of the disease and its impact in older people.

SUMMARY:The Woodhull Study Revisited: Nurses’ Representation in Health News Media
DESCRIPTION:  \nThe George Washington University School of Nursing Center for Health Policy and Media Engagement has replicated the original 1998 Woodhull study\, named after Nancy Woodhull\, the founding editor of USA Today about nurses in the media. The original Woodhull study was done to raise awareness of the voices and perspectives of nurse professionals in the media. The Center has replicated the 20-year-old original study to determine what progress has been made. Twenty years later\, are nurses used as sources more often in health news stories in print media? \nThis three-phase study sought to answer the following questions: the actual replication of the original Woodhull Study Publication that examined journalists’ use of nurses as sources in leading print media of the day; a qualitative study of journalists’ experiences using nurses as sources in health news stories; and an analysis of the tweets from the top 50 schools of nursing. \nThe quantitative research of the 2018 study is being conducted with the Berkeley Media Studies Group. The research team is comprised of: \n\n\nDiana J. Mason\, PhD\, RN\, FAAN\, Senior Policy Service Professor for The George Washington School of Nursing Center for Health Policy and Media Engagement \n\n\nBarbara Glickstein\, MPH\, MS\, RN\, Director of Communications and Media Projects for The George Washington School of Nursing Center for Health Policy and Media Engagement \n\n\nLaura Nixon\, MPH\, Senior Media Researcher\, Berkeley Media Studies Group \n\n\nKristi Westphaln\, PhD\, RN\, CPNP-PC\, Pediatric Nurse Practitioner\, Senior Fellow for The George Washington School of Nursing Center for Health Policy and Media Engagement \n\n\nKimberly D. Acquaviva\, PhD\, MSW\, CSE\, Professor\, The George Washington School of Nursing \n\n\nNATIONAL PRESS CLUB PRESS CONFERENCE May 8\, 2018 \nThe high-level findings from the “Nurses and the Media: A Qualitative Study of Journalists’ Use of Nurses as Sources in Health News Stories” will be presented at a press conference at the National Press Club in Washington\, DC\, on May 8th. Following the presentation of the high-level findings\, there will be a reaction panel including: \n\n\nIvan Oransky\, MD\, President of the Association for Health Care Journalists \n\n\nKate McCarthy\, Director of Programs for the Women’s Media Center \n\n\nYanick Rice Lamb\, Chair/Associate Professor of Cathy Hughes School of Communications and interim assistant chair of the new Department of Media\, Journalism and Film \n\n\nLive streaming of the event will be available free of charge. If you would like to attend via live-stream\, you must RSVP. \nFunding for this study was provided by the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation\, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation\, Beatrice Renfield Foundation\, Sigma Theta Tau International\, American Association of Critical-Care Nurses\, Donald and Barbara Jonas Foundation\, National League for Nursing\, Wolters Kluwer Health\, On Course Learning\, American Association of Colleges of Nursing\, and American Organization of Nurse Executives. \nABOUT THE CENTER FOR HEALTH POLICY & MEDIA ENGAGEMENT: \nThe George Washington University School of Nursing Center for Health Policy and Media Engagement exists to advance policy and the health of the public\, through education\, research\, media\, and public forums. \nHealthCetera is the Center’s blog and podcast featuring evidence-based news\, analysis and commentary.
