SUMMARY:International Council on Active Aging Annual Conference
DESCRIPTION:Many journeys\, many destinations\nFor adults ages 50 and older\, wellness is a way of living well. An enriched lifestyle provides opportunities for people to learn\, to grow and to engage as fully as possible in all of life’s dimensions. For organizations and professionals that serve older adults\, wellness can be a philosophy\, a culture\, a business model\, and a way to organize programs and facilities to support active aging. \nBecause it encompasses so much\, wellness has many journeys\, many destinations. Goals\, paths and preferences differ depending on the individual and the organization; so\, too\, do needs and interests. The International Council on Active Aging delivers a unique educational and networking event designed to meet both. \nEstablished in 2001\, ICAA leads\, defines and connects the active-aging industry. Seminars and workshops at the annual ICAA Conference address the many dimensions\, roles and needs in the industry. \nSee the website for a schedule\, registration and more information.

SUMMARY:ECRI Institute’s 19th Annual Conference on the Use of Evidence in Policy and Practice
DESCRIPTION:This free conference featuring 40 nationally recognized experts will examine the evidence of “what works and why it works” in American health care. Certain systems produce better outcomes than others\, but attention seldom focuses on what elements within these health care systems produce positive change. \nThe conference’s examination of “systemness” will include:\n\nWhat is “systemness?”\nWhich elements within mature health care systems result in the best clinical outcomes?\nAre approaches taken by long-established health care systems transferable to smaller\, newer\, or less integrated systems?\nAre financial incentives alone enough to drive change?\nHow can EHRs help improve “systemness?”\nDo “transformation” units within health systems produce results?\n\nThis conference will be an important step towards encouraging healthcare systems to evaluate what is working for them and what is working for others by examining the evidence. \nThere is no fee to attend the program\, but space is limited and advance registration is required. \nFollow the conversation on twitter with #EIConf12

SUMMARY:Medicare Symposium for Journalists
DESCRIPTION:Seismic shifts are coming to Medicare. Thanks to the recent Supreme Court decision to uphold the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act\, many fundamental changes in the program are already under way. And depending on how the November elections play out\, many more could soon be on the horizon. \nJournalists and editors who may be called upon to cover Medicare are invited to learn more about this complex program at a unique event on the campus of the University of Michigan–Ann Arbor this fall.  \nOn Oct. 2\, 2012\, The Medicare NewsGroup\, in partnership with the Center for Healthcare Research & Transformation\, will host a free regional symposium for journalists on the basics of Medicare reform\, economics\, policies and quality initiatives. \nAttendees will learn about the most pressing Medicare issues from industry experts and those on the front lines of change in the program. The event will include speakers from AARP Michigan\, the Center for Healthcare Research & Transformation\, the University of Michigan Health System and the University of Michigan School of Public Health. \nThe event will be comprised of six dynamic sessions designed to give journalists a firm grounding in some of the most controversial aspects of the program. Sessions will include various presentation formats such as Q&A discussions and panel forum sessions. Journalists will leave each session with takeaways that will include story ideas\, source lists\, Medicare fact sheets and resource links. \n“Our goal is to give journalists\, who sometimes are thrown into the beat with limited resources and research budgets\, an intensive Medicare basics course so they can hit the ground running when it comes to Medicare reporting\,” says EJ Mitchell\, managing editor of The Medicare NewsGroup. “We hope the journalists who participate will feel more informed about the topic\, and will become more comfortable writing articles and analyses on the program and the politics surrounding it.” \nEvent Information \nTime: Program will run from 9 a.m.–4 p.m. Breakfast and lunch will be provided. Date: Tuesday\, October 2 \nPrice: Free Location: University of Michigan–Ann Arbor (specific campus venue to be announced at a later date) Registration: Contact Alison Szot\, senior editor at The Medicare NewsGroup\, at 847-786-4480 or aszot@medicarenewsgroup.com \n\nAbout The Medicare NewsGroup \nCreated by journalists\, for journalists\, The Medicare NewsGroup is an independent resource for Medicare news\, policy and legislation with original and curated content. SUMMARY:Future of Medicine Summit VI
DESCRIPTION:The 2012 Future of Medicine Summit VI will feature local and nationally recognized speakers to share their wisdom. \nThe Future of Medicine is designed to engage physicians and key community stakeholders in the reformation of the County’s health care delivery system to one that make sense and addresses fundamental patient care and cost issues\, creating a road map to where medicine should be in five years. \nIn November of 2007 a summit of 135 of these stakeholders from Palm Beach County representing businesses\, physicians\, hospitals\, public health officials and elected officials\, gathered to begin the creation of this map. Using data collected from over 300 surveys done across the county they decided to create four distinct working groups to address health issues in the county. These groups were to address: \n\nCovering more people and improving access to primary care\nEncouraging and enhancing prevention and wellness activities across the county\nEnhancing quality of care and patient safety\nImproving the viability of physician practices and other healthcare providers\n\nEach of these working groups\, comprised of volunteers from the county\, have met on a regular basis since then and have created specific goals to address the mandates given them.  The work is re-addressed each year with an annual Summit. \nThe Summit is partnering with Scripps Florida to explore three areas relevant to many in the general public\, as well as physicians and health care providers.  This year three chronic conditions will be covered:  diabetes\, heart disease\, and mental health with a focus on bipolar disorder.

SUMMARY:IOM Workshop: Infectious Disease Detection
DESCRIPTION:The systems to detect and respond to infectious disease outbreaks have suffered decades of underfunding and neglect in the United States and other countries\, and the global financial crisis has worsened the problem.  At the same time\, the recent outbreak of hantavirus in Yosemite National Park\, illnesses due to salmonella-contaminated mangoes\, the whooping cough epidemic in Washington state\, and reports of increasingly drug-resistant tuberculosis abroad all point to the crucial need for systems that can effectively prevent\, detect\, and mount a rapid response to infectious agents. \nThe Institute of Medicine is hosting a two-day workshop to explore how to maintain effective infectious disease surveillance and response capacity in an age of austerity.  Participants will look at the impact of budget cutbacks on population health and public health agencies among other topics. \nThe workshop will run from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. EDT on Sept. 10\, and from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. EDT on Sept. 11 in Room 100 of the National Academies’ Keck Center\, 500 Fifth St.\, N.W.\, Washington\, D.C.  An agenda and registration are available online.
