SUMMARY:Obamacare: Covering What Comes Next
DESCRIPTION:The Affordable Care Act\, or Obamacare\, raises complex and often very personal questions for Americans. Reporters can learn the facts and nuances of this program\, how it works\, what it means and how to localize this story. \n\nThe workshop is the first in a series of six 2014 Specialized Reporting Institutes funded by the Robert R. McCormick Foundation to give reporters the knowledge\, context\, contacts and story ideas they need to cover critical topics in the news. AHCJ is partnering with the Poynter Institute to host this workshop at the Philip Merrill College of Journalism at the University of Maryland\, College Park. Sessions will be held in The Eaton Theater and the Herb Block Room. \nHere’s what you’ll learn: \n\nHow insurance works and how journalists can measure the ACA’s performance\nHow to put a face on the story\nWhat’s next: Will the Young Invincibles sign up? Can providers handle the new load of patients?\nHow to find stories hidden in data\nWhat’s in the next wave of health care reform\, and the ethical questions you need to ask\nAt least 30 story ideas to take home\n\nClick HERE for a draft workshop agenda. \nParticipants receive a one-year paid membership to AHCJ. \nOur goals for this intensive workshop are straightforward. We will not focus on political fights and computer glitches\, which get a lot of coverage already. Instead we will help journalists understand health care insurance and health policy. You will hear from top-notch journalists who have covered the Affordable Care Act since it was being drafted in Congress. \nThis workshop is open to working journalists from any media\, including network and cable television\, radio\, newspaper\, magazine and online journalists. We welcome applications from reporters\, producers\, photojournalists\, graphic designers\, full-time freelancers\, news managers and editors. From our application pool\, we will select a class of 25 participants who represent a wide range of market sizes\, media\, geography and media ownership\, including minority media. We will give priority to full-time U.S. based journalists. \nApplications are no longer being accepted for this training.

SUMMARY:Covering Immigrants and Refugees
DESCRIPTION:A workshop for reporters\, photographers and news managers on covering immigrants and refugees\, with a special focus on mental health and related issues\, sponsored by the Scattergood Foundation\, will take place December 6-7\, 2013. \nAmid national debate over immigration reform\, recent immigrants and refugees face a host of challenges in the U.S. Many have survived extreme traumas in their native countries\, such as genocide or violent civil conflict\, natural disaster\, chronic community violence\, poverty and human trafficking. Here\, they may encounter discrimination in housing\, education\, employment\, health care or in encounters with law enforcement\, along with cultural and language barriers. Women and children often face particular challenges\, including family violence. \nAll of these issues have a profound impact and demand robust mental-health support for individual immigrants\, families and communities. But despite this well-documented need\, immigrants face significant obstacles in accessing essential help. \nReporters\, too\, face special challenges in covering immigrant communities – whether in individual stories\, on community beats or in reporting on politics and policy. \nTo help local journalists and regional news organizations in the Greater Philadelphia area improve their coverage of immigrant communities\, the Dart Center for Journalism and Trauma at Columbia Journalism School is sponsoring “Covering Immigrants and Mental Health.” \nThe workshop will feature a range of local and national mental health and immigration policy experts\, award-winning journalists\, immigrant community advocates and service providers. The workshop will include expert briefings and specialized reporting skills training to enhance the practical ability of journalists to report on immigrants and immigration-related issues knowledgeably\, ethically and effectively.  \nThe workshop is offered at no cost to reporters in print\, broadcast and online media as well as editors\, photographers\, producers or bloggers. Staff\, contract and freelance journalists are welcome.   \nFor more information\, or to register\, please email Ariel Ritchin at ariel.ritchin@dartcenter.org with your name\, position and contact information.

SUMMARY:IOM workshop: Impact of the ACA on U.S. preparedness resources and programs
DESCRIPTION:With many elements of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) going into effect in 2014\, and the establishment of many new rules and regulations\, there have been and will continue to be significant changes to the U.S. health system. However\, it is not clear what impact these changes will have on medical and public health preparedness programs around the country.  As funding for these programs continues to decline\, leveraging changes in health care delivery and structure to enhance and increase individual and community preparedness becomes even more important. \nThis workshop will examine how the changes to the health system as a result of the ACA may impact the medical and public health preparedness programs across the nation\, and how the ACA provisions may be leveraged to strengthen the resilience of the medical and public health preparedness systems.  Beginning with discussions on changing financing and delivery\, and moving to more detailed conversations on roles and potential within threat identification and information technology infrastructure\, participants will examine current and future opportunities for protecting the nation’s health in disasters through new relationships and more integrated care.  \nSee the draft agenda. \nMeeting objectives: \n\n\nExplore opportunities to leverage benefits of health care reform and develop action steps that the preparedness community can take to mitigate identified challenges. \n\n\nDiscuss challenges and benefits of the Affordable Care Act to disaster preparedness and response efforts around the country. \n\n\nConsider how changes to payment and reimbursement models will present opportunities and challenges to strengthen disaster preparedness and response capacities. \n\n\nExplore potential impacts changing health care delivery infrastructure may have on disaster preparedness and response. \n\n\nConsider how impacts on the health system workforce may impact resilience\, emergency preparedness\, response\, mitigation\, and recovery. \n\n\nExplore how changes to data collected through health information technology may be used to strengthen community resilience. \n\n\nEvaluate needs and opportunities in data collection\, surveillance\, and communication for robust threat identification and public health response. \n\n\nPreregistration is strongly encouraged due to security procedures required to access NAS/IOM facilities. \nNational Academy of Sciences Building (Lecture Room)2101 Constitution Avenue\, NWWashington\, DC 20418
