DESCRIPTION:Threats to global health security continue to evolve due to the changing nature of conflict\, advances in science and technology\, globalization\, and the growing threat posed by emerging infectious diseases and pandemics. Pandemics\, Bioterrorism and Global Health Security: From Anthrax to Zika is a three-day\, non-credit summer workshop designed to introduce participants to the challenges facing the world at the intersection of national security\, public health\, and the life sciences. The workshop faculty are internationally recognized experts from the government\, private sector\, and academia who have been extensively involved with research and policy-making on public health\, biodefense\, and national security issues. The workshop is organized by the Biodefense Graduate Program at the Schar School of Policy and Government at George Mason University. \n\nIdentify the range of biological threats and assess the risks they pose to public health and national security\nDescribe impediments to organizational change and identify strategies for overcoming these obstacles.\nExamine lessons learned from the SARS and avian flu outbreaks\, the 2009 influenza pandemic\, and the 2014-2016 West Africa Ebola outbreak.\nExplore the dual-use dilemma and how to balance the benefits of advanced biotechnologies against the safety and security risks they can pose.\nInvestigate the growing importance of biotechnology to the national economy\, domestic and international risks to biotechnology innovation\, and legal\, policy\, and regulatory measures for safeguarding the bioeconomy.\nUnderstand the technical\, political\, regulatory\, and financial obstacles to developing new medical countermeasures for bioterrorist and pandemic threats.

SUMMARY:Early Childhood Global Reporting Institute
DESCRIPTION:Children are the news – whether as the subjects of stories\, the targets of social policies\, or the victims of family violence\, natural disaster\, or war. \nTo foster more effective reporting on vulnerable children\, the Dart Center is launching the Early Childhood Reporting Initiative: Covering Trauma\, Resilience and the Developing Brain. This new initiative will provide journalists around the world with the knowledge\, skills and resources to incorporate emerging science and policy on early childhood development into their coverage. Workshops are planned for: New York\, USA; Amman\, Jordan; Abidjan\, Côte d’Ivoire; Mumbai\, India; and Rio di Janeiro\, Brazil. \nThe first globally-themed institute – a four-day program at Columbia Journalism School in New York City June 28 to July 1\, 2018 – is designed for reporters on any beat touching the first seven years of life\, whether schools or health\, war or social policy\, neighborhoods or refugees. It will focus on advancements in neuroscience and their implications for child development\, concentrating especially on vulnerable children living in extreme poverty and unstable environments. \nThis workshop will include panels and presentations by leading neuroscientists\, economists\, and child development experts\, as well as journalist-to-journalist seminars on how to translate these issues and themes into meaningful stories and relevant\, captivating news coverage. \nTwenty-five journalists from around the world will be selected for the institute. Roundtrip travel\, three-four nights of hotel lodging\, ground transportation and most meals will be covered by the Dart Center. \nThis three-year initiative has been underwritten by the Bernard van Leer Foundation\, the Jacobs Foundation\, the Maria Cecilia Souto Vidigal Foundation and The Two Lilies Fund. \nFor more information and to apply\, click here.
