SUMMARY:Health Literacy Month
DESCRIPTION:Health Literacy Month is a time for organizations and individuals to promote the importance of understandable health information. This annual\, worldwide\, awareness-raising event has been going strong ever since Helen Osborne founded it in 1999. \nMaterials include the Health Literacy Handbook and a pod cast.  \nPew Charitable Trust is releasing nearly 100 facts about the state of Americans’ health as part of Health Literacy Month. We’re covering issues like exercise\, nutrition\, screen time\, mental health\, and cancer\, with the goal of making health information easier to access. Data is from the Pew Research Center and from the CDC\, and we’re promoting a short quiz. You can find the quiz\, the facts\, and the background behind the data at livingfacts.org.

SUMMARY:Addressing Health Disparities in the LGBTQ Community
DESCRIPTION:LGBTQ individuals face health disparities linked to stigma and discrimination. These disparities are exacerbated when people are unable to access care or are uncomfortable asking providers for the treatment they need. Rates of mental health disorders\, substance use disorders\, and suicide are higher among LGBTQ populations\, but culturally competent health care can make a difference. \nWith the right tools and training\, providers and community partners can build more inclusive environments for LGBTQ individuals inside and outside the doctor’s office.  \nThis webinar will explore: \n\n\nThe demographics and health care needs of the LGBTQ population \n\n\nBarriers to high quality health care for LGBTQ people and proposed solutions \n\n\nA toolkit designed to train medical school students and current providers on clinical skills for inclusive care \n\n\nNew national survey data on LGBT teen mental health and the role of crisis responders in supplementing the health care system \n\n\nFeaturing\n\n\nAlex Keuroghlian\, National LGBT Health Education Center \n\n\nJennifer Potter\, Harvard Medical School \n\n\nSusan Sawning\, University of Louisville School of Medicine \n\n\nChris Bright\, The Trevor Project \n\n\n  \n  \nA draft agenda is available.
