Computer-assisted reporting basics: Investigating health data using spreadsheets: This hands-on session will cover the basics on how to use Excel spreadsheet software to analyze electronic information, finding patterns and trends for deadline and project reporting. With a focus on health, the session will also include tips on locating and using datasets online that can enhance your stories. Even if you’ve never used a spreadsheet before, you’ll come away with a jumpstart to add this skill. If you’ve had some experience, you’ll find some tricks and strategies to make your use more effective.
Field trip: Visit elementary and high school health clinics in the Bronx, which are part of the largest hospital-sponsored school-based health program of its kind in the country. Learn up close the issues facing inner-city children and teens, as well as how teachers and health workers try to help.
