Avian flu: Reacting to the crisis
Edited excerpts from a lengthy transcript from "The Next Big (Health) Crisis - And How to Cover It," a conference cosponsored by AHCJ at the Nieman Foundation.
In this session, speakers addressed how people react and respond to disasters and lessons that can guide journalists in understanding better what they can expect to happen if pandemic flu occurs.
Speakers on this topic included:
- Dori Reissman, commander, United States Public Health Service, and senior medical adviser, National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health. She discussed what behavioral and social sciences can tell us about human behavior in a pandemic.
- Sandro Galea, associate professor, Center for Social Epidemiology and Population Health, University of Michigan. She spoke about "A model of human behavior after disasters: Evidence from a systematic study of disasters during the past 50 years."
