Traffic crashes kill (Jacob Nelson presentation)
Panel: The intersection of highway safety and health (Health Journalism 2011)
Speaker: Jacob Nelson, director of traffic safety policy & research, American Automobile Association
Panel description: Motor vehicle accidents claim more lives than any other kind of transportation accident. And distracted driving has joined alcohol and speeding as leading factors in fatal and serious injury crashes. Yet at any point during the day, an estimated 11 percent of drivers are talking on a cell phone. Are hands-free cell phones safe for drivers? Then there’s the problem of commercial drivers and companies with repeated safety violations. Are the National Transportation Safety Board’s recommendations on passenger and commercial transportation being followed? With highway safety laws largely left up to the states, the regulation of highway safety is a hodgepodge.
