FDA science and mission at risk

A November 2007 report concludes that "science at the FDA is in a precarious position: the Agency suffers from serious scientific deficiencies and is not positioned to meet current or emerging regulatory responsibilities."

The report was carried out by the Subcommittee on Science and Technology of the FDA Science Board, the advisory board to the FDA commissioner.

Major findings in the report are that the FDA cannot fulfill its mission because its scientific base has eroded and its scientific organizational structure is weak, its scientific workforce does not have sufficient capacity and capability and its information technology infrastructure is inadequate.
