Full Time, Two-Year Term Position with Possibility of Extension

Can you be the Nate Silver of health care? Are you a fan of the New York Times UpShot blog? California Healthline and Kaiser Health News (KHN) are seeking an enterprising and energetic digital reporter to help us dig into one of the most important issues of our time: health care. The California Healthline website and its online newsletter are a California-based publication of Kaiser Health News, a nonprofit news service focused on health and health policy, with one of the fastest growing newsrooms in the country. We provide stories that matter to families, policy makers and other people of all ages.

We are seeking a creative reporter to broaden the reach and appeal of California health policy and politics news through innovative strategies. The successful candidate will be deft with social media and data -- coming up with compelling online presentations of daily, enterprise and investigative stories. It also includes analysis and visualization of health care research. That means being able to translate numbers and jargon into posts that pop. You also need to be an engaging writer and smart curator, with a sharp eye for stories that people will want to -- or need to -- know about. You must be interested in health care and have good ideas about how to make it interesting to others.

We work on a partnership model. That means most of our stories appear – free of charge -- in a wide variety of media outlets from NPR, the Los Angeles Times and KQED and Radio Bilingue and the Redding Record Searchlight. But we also have a following on Facebook and Twitter – and one of your mandates is to make that grow and think of ways to spread our work on Instagram and other storytelling platforms. We want someone who has ideas about how to configure tweets or posts so they can draw in people who have not heard about California Healthline or KHN.

Our work includes everything from breaking news to deep investigations – and you will be part of all of it. We are a highly collaborative newsroom. We want your smart ideas but you also have to be willing to learn – especially since this job requires you to develop a wide variety of skills. You will have the opportunity to work with some of the best health journalists in the country, including the reporters and editors of California Healthline and the staff in Washington, D.C., where our Social Media Manager as well as web and data teams are based.

This full-time position will be based in the Foundation’s new headquarters in San Francisco, California, which is located one block from Caltrain’s 4th and King Street Station. The position offers a competitive salary commensurate with experience and qualifications, and includes an excellent benefits package. The Digital Reporter will report to KHN’s California Bureau Chief, Julie Marquis, who is based in Los Angeles. We’d prefer if you had at least two years of experience in online journalism, but we aren’t going to rule out someone who is a go-getter with less.

Please let us know why you want this job – and why you would be the best person for us to hire. We’re excited to hear from you.
