Career Development: Job Postings

Job type: Full-time Position
Location: Pasadena, CA
Position: Community Health Reporter
Organization: Southern California Public Radio
Date posted: 01/31/18

What makes a community healthy and what barriers do some face in accessing health care? What does it mean to live in a healthy and clean environment? Those are some of the questions the Community Health reporter will seek to answer. S/he will report on community health issues in Southern California, focusing on the experiences, needs and stories of people and groups outside the mainstream or facing economic, physical, social or cultural barriers to the resources that support healthy communities. Are there disparities in care and outcomes? What’s behind them – and what are potential solutions?

The Reporter will bring strong journalism fundamentals, beat knowledge and curiosity to daily and enterprise reporting and use creative approaches to engage the community in coverage.

Working in KPCC’s cross-platform newsroom, s/he will report, write and produce on-air reports, post online stories, and use social media and web tools to report, engage beat sources and listeners/users and develop reporting projects. The reporter will also contribute ideas and act as a resource to other news staff.

This position will be either a Reporter I OR Reporter II-level position depending upon the most qualified candidate's experience.  The Reporter II is a higher-level position that varies from the Reporter I to include the following attributes in addition to those outlined under "Position Responsibility":

  • Covers a beat(s)/area of expertise/broad variety of assignments

  • Breaks stories

  • Cultivates sources; Participate with PIJ involvement, if applicable

  • Delivers stories with fully developed on-air style and originality in writing

Instead of a standard cover letter, send us some examples of your best work. (Don’t worry, they don’t have to be health stories.) What made them work? What would you do differently if you had the chance? Also, tell us how you’d approach this beat. What would success look like to you?
