Position Summary:

KFF (Kaiser Family Foundation), a non-profit organization, is a leader in health policy analysis, polling and survey research, health journalism and communication, dedicated to filling the need for trusted information on national health issues. KFF serves as a non-partisan source of facts, information, and analysis for policymakers, the media, the health care community, and the public.

KFF is seeking a Communications Officer who will develop and implement a variety of strategies to promote KFF’s work. This is an opportunity for a communications professional with proven experience engaging with the press on public policy issues, supporting digital and social media communications, and working in a dynamic and evolving organization.

This position reports to the Director of Communications, who is based in Washington, DC. The candidate may be based in San Francisco, CA or Washington, D.C.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
-Develop and implement communications strategies and tactics to promote the work of KFF, including its policy analysis, polling, and journalism, to inform key audiences.
-Build relationships with national and local journalists, including broadcast and radio, to share KFF’s latest research and facilitate interviews with KFF experts. -Experience with, and knowledge of, broadcast engagement strategies will be critical.
-Draft, edit, and clear key communications products and materials, including news releases, social media posts, event communications, commentary, newsletter content, and internal reports.
-Collaborate effectively across the full organization in both the San Francisco and Washington, D.C. offices, and within the Communications team, often working directly with senior program and operations leaders on plans and materials.
-Track external health policy developments and media coverage to connect KFF’s work to ongoing policy discussions and emerging issues.
-Contribute to other Communications department initiatives and projects, as needed, including considering new digital tools, supporting audience engagement strategies, and other tasks.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Experience

-At least five years of experience working in communications or journalism with a demonstrated ability to understand and translate data and complex issues.  and experience in health policy is a plus.
-Familiarity with media relations, including an understanding of how journalists work and what they need from sources. Experience as a reporter, or working with reporters, covering health policy is a plus. Proven experience pitching broadcast and radio outlets to secure coverage is essential. 
-Strong writing and editing skills, including a demonstrated ability to write quickly, clearly, and accurately about policy, polls, and/or data.
-Knowledge of digital and social media communications strategies is a plus.
-Strong organizational skills and the proven ability to manage multiple projects and thrive in a fast-paced environment where priorities often shift quickly based on external and internal factors.
-The ability to remain calm under deadline pressure and diplomatically negotiate solutions to overcome internal and external challenges and maximize the reach and impact of KFF’s work.
-Experience with planning and managing in-person and/or virtual briefings and events.
 
KFF is currently working a hybrid schedule and requires all staff to work in the office a minimum of 2 days a week, with a longer-term hybrid policy of 3 days per week. Limited overnight travel for occasional meetings and conferences is expected.

Compensation

KFF provides a compensation package that is competitive and commensurate with experience and qualifications.

The annual salary range for the Communications Officer position is between $95,000 and $115,000. Offers are based on the candidate's years of experience and our practice of upholding salary equity within the organization.
