The Association of Health Care Journalists is looking for a full-time Development Officer to create and execute a fundraising plan that builds on our previous efforts with foundations while developing new strategies for diversifying revenue. This role is central to strengthening and increasing philanthropic support for AHCJ’s mission for years to come.

You’ll manage and grow our portfolio of grants from regional and national funders, which have included The Commonwealth Fund, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, Kaiser Family Foundation, W.K. Kellogg Foundation, Pew Charitable Trusts, John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, Mayo Clinic, Johns Hopkins Institutions and Arnold Ventures, among many others. Our annual budget is $1.8 million. 


The Association of Health Care Journalists is an independent, nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing public understanding of health care issues. Our mission is to improve the quality, accuracy and visibility of health care reporting, writing and editing among our roughly 1,500 members. 

The  Center for Excellence in Health Care Journalism is a supporting 501(c)(3) for AHCJ, and works to ensure journalists are properly trained to cover news events, trends and issues in all aspects of health care journalism.

  • Proactively identify and research new and promising national, regional and local foundation and grant-making funding sources, ensuring a robust pipeline for ongoing support that aligns with AHCJ’s mission 
  • Work collaboratively with program staff to secure project information for writing compelling grant applications (front-end) and impactful, timely and accurate reporting on or before all required deadlines (back-end) 
  • Create and execute a development plan, being ultimately responsible for managing grant timelines and deliverables for each prospective funder 
  • Track grant contacts, deadlines, revenue and other relevant data and prepare monthly reports on grant funding received, applied for and researched
  • Work with the Executive Director and Fiscal Officer on strategies for diversifying revenue
  • Create fundraising materials, including a formal Case for Support and annual report 
  • Collaborate with the Executive Director and board of directors to update the organization’s fundraising guidelines to adhere to best practices and ethical standards 
  • Create and execute a stewardship plan for each major funder and acknowledge gifts made to the organization 
  • Prepare the Executive Director for asks by scheduling, briefing and drafting proposals 
  • Foster an environment of diversity, equity and inclusion that upholds the organization’s values and strategic goals 

START DATE: Negotiable, but ideally February or March 2023

COMPENSATION: $65,000 - $85,000 annual salary (commensurate with experience), plus benefits

LOCATION: Remote or hybrid. AHCJ is based at the University of Missouri School of Journalism in Columbia, Missouri. However, we have staff that are remote and hybrid. We are open to remote candidates with the understanding that occasional travel may be required.
