Philadelphia chapter: Fetal surgery expert event at CHOP

Children's Hospital of Philadelphia is hosting a Philadelphia chapter meeting for the Association of Health Care Journalists on Thursday, Sept. 26 from 5:30 to 8:30 pm.

The focus is on fetal surgery, a field that has delivered big changes in spina bifida treatment and other complex conditions diagnosed before birth.

The sessions will kick off at 5:55 pm with a Welcome-Intro from Dr. Scott Adzick, CHOP's Surgeon-in-Chief, and at 6:05 pm, we go to breakout groups, enabling us to rotate through six short presentations.

Here's a breakdown of the six presenters:

1. N. Scott Adzick, MD - Surgeon-in-Chief and Director, Center for Fetal Diagnosis and Treatment
Topic: Open Fetal Surgery - Overview of the fetal surgery - what conditions are being treated today and what is on the horizon (specifically research underway to eventually replace open fetal surgery for spina bifida with a more minimally invasive approach).
Location: Fetal surgery operating room

2. Mark P. Johnson, MD - Obstetrical Director, Center for Fetal Diagnosis and Treatment
Topic: Minimally Invasive Fetal Surgery what is currently happening and what is on the horizon.
Location: SDU Conference Room (lots of videos in this presentation)

3. Lori J. Howell, MS, RN (Executive Director, Center for Fetal Diagnosis and Treatment) and Lynne Garbose (CHOP board member and benefactor of CHOP's Garbose Family Special Delivery Unit (SDU)).

Topic: Lynne will share her personal story with having a baby with the birth defect, Lori will discuss why the SDU was created and how we are Now seeing better outcomes for babies with birth defects because of it (these papers will all be published in peer reviewed journals over the next year or so).

4. Alan W. Flake, MD -- Attending Fetal and Pediatric Surgeon and Director, Center for Fetal Research
Topic: A potential prenatal cure for sickle cell  -- Dr. Flake is positioned to start a clinical trial in the next few years for his work to prenatally cure sickle cell disease via stem cell injection. He will give a preview of his work.
Location: Abramson Library on 11th Floor

5. Julie S. Moldenhauer, MD (Medical Director of the Garbose Family Special Delivery Unit) and Joanna C.M. Cole, PhD (Clinical Psychologist for the Center for Fetal Diagnosis and Treatment)
Topic: CHOP is the first fetal program to have a dedicated clinical psychologist who just specializes on mothers caring babies with birth defects. Joanna in currently conducting several studies about the psychological aspects of this fetal medicine. She and Julie will preview their work.

6. Holly L. Hedrick, MD and Marcus Davey, PhD - Topic: Fetal Medicine Research Overview. Marcus runs our Center for Fetal Research lab and Holly Hedrick is an attending fetal and pediatric surgeon. They will partner to talk about some of the other exciting reach happening in the lab, as well as how that translates to clinical research and then long term outcomes/follow up research. This presentation will preview a new fetal surgery procedure CHOP expects to launch in the next year or so for congenital diaphragmatic hernia.
Location: In the center for fetal research lab
