Health in the Headlines: A European conference on health journalism

06/23/11 - 06/24/11     Coventry, U.K.

Health in the Headlines logoPresented by Coventry University and the Association of Health Care Journalists
with support from the Medical Journalists Association (UK) and EU's HeaRT project

Speakers will include health journalists, researchers and policy officials from England, the United States, Ireland, Italy, Greece and other nations.

Health systems in Europe are complex, costly, under pressure from a growing elderly population and increasingly subject to complicated "reforms" and reorganization. Health research generates a daily flow of highly technical literature, while powerful multinational drug companies spend millions on extensive public relations campaigns.

While the public is dependent upon the news media for information on health, public health campaigns, news on health services and the latest new drugs and treatments, only a minority of the journalists covering health stories have any specific training on health issues. Most are left to "learn on the job" – and many become too dependent on a diet of press releases and managed news.

The program

This conference aims to address some of the key issues in health journalism, as well as the state of training of health journalists, and pressures in modern newsrooms. See the schedule and who will be speaking.
