Philadelphia's AHCJ chapter will host a free workshop on health care reporting featuring guest lecturers Gary Schwitzer, associate professor at the University of Minnesota School of Journalism and Mass Communications, and publisher of HealthNewsReview.org, and Kathleen Fairfield, MD, DrPH, a medical editor with HealthNewsReview.org and clinician-scientist at Maine Medical Center.

Gary and Kathleen will discuss the HealthNewsReview.org project, which has involved about two dozen reviewers who've evaluated and graded health news coverage for the past two-and-a-half years by reviewing 700 stories from 60 leading news organizations in the U.S.

They will share their data on how news organizations have performed on 10 criteria for accurate, balanced and complete coverage; reflect on trends observed in the coverage of health care news; and provide tips about evaluating claims made about new health care treatments, tests, products and procedures.

The event is open to AHCJ members, working journalists, and journalism students.
