Science Writers in Italy 2014 Meeting

The Italian chapter of AHCJ will collaborate on the first national meeting of the Science Writers in Italy, to take place Feb. 15-16 in Florence.

On Feb. 15, the venue will be the Museum of Natural Sciences (Skeletons’ room in the Specola) in the city center. On Feb. 16, the gathering will be at Galileo’s House, “Il Gioiello,” in Arcetri.

The fee (50 euros) will cover coffee and lunch breaks. The official language will be Italian. Visit this website for more details (in Italian).


Saturday, Feb, 15

10:30 a.m.: Arrival and registration al La Specola, Sala degli Scheletri, via Roma 17, Firenze.

11-12:30 p.m.: Discussion on the education and continuing education of science journalists in Italy
Moderator: Daniela Ovadia (board member of Science Writers in Italy, member of AHCJ)

12:30-1:30 p.m.: buffet lunch

1:30-3 p.m.: Discussion on national and international networks for science journalism, grants and research projects on science journalism
Moderator: Fabio Turone (President of Science Writers in Italy, member of AHCJ)

3-3:30 p.m.: Coffee break

3:30-5:00 p.m.: Dealing with a changing job market for science journalists
Moderator: Silvia Bencivelli (Treasurer of Science Writers in Italy)

5-7 p.m.: General Assembly of Science Writers in Italy (restricted to members)


Sunday, Feb. 16

9:30 a.m.: Arrival at Galileo’s House, “Il Gioiello,” in Arcetri

10 a.m. –noon: Workshop on data journalism and data visualization by Alessio Cimarelli and Andrea Nelson Mauro (Dataninja.it)

Noon-1 p.m.: Meeting with the researchers of the National Institute of Optics in occasion of the celebrations for the 450th anniversary of Galileo’s birth.

1 p.m.: Good-bye lunch
