New hospital inspection reports released: Database has more than 30,000 records

HospitalInspections.orgFor more than five years, the Association of Health Care Journalists has been updating quarterly the website HospitalInspections.org, where the public can search and review hospital inspection reports.

With this month’s update, the database now includes 30,541 records of hospital inspection results, covering from January 2011 into June 2018. Most of the records include a detailed report on each deficiency found in hospitals. Continue reading

Experts discussed rural health topics at workshop

AHCJ’s 10th annual Rural Health Journalism Workshop brought journalists to North Carolina’s Research Triangle to hear from experts who offered resources and story ideas about the health challenges facing the United States’ 47 million rural residents.

Nearly 70 attended the all-day workshop, gaining a better understanding of what’s happening – or will be happening – in rural regions. Continue reading

Now available: Updated data on what Medicare paid to health care providers

AHCJ just processed almost 10 million records of Medicare payments to providers for 2016, turning it into easy-to-use spreadsheets broken down by state.

In 2016, Medicare paid more than $82 billion in payments to 91 types of providers, including physicians, therapists, ambulance services, surgical centers and more. Continue reading

Hospital inspection records added to searchable site

HospitalInspections.orgHospital inspection records from this year have been added to the searchable HospitalInspections.org website. The site, created and run by the Association of Health Care Journalists, now has 29,428 records of hospital inspection results, covering from January 2011 into March 2018. Most of the records include a detailed report on each deficiency found in hospitals.

The site uses a file from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The site, open to the public, allows searches by keyword, city, state and hospital name.

Plans coming together for #AHCJ18 in Phoenix

The Valley of the Sun will host Health Journalism 2018, AHCJ’s annual conference marking its 20th anniversary. The conference in Phoenix is scheduled for April 12-15.

In the past two decades, AHCJ has grown to more than 1,500 members. The 2018 conference will feature more than 60 events over four days.

Health Journalism 2018 will launch early on April 12 with journalists lining up for field trips to local research, clinical and educational sites. On the same day, the Pointe Hilton Tapatio Cliffs Resort will be the center of a series of skill-building workshops and a featured “Science of …” track covering stem cells, genetic testing and marijuana.
