Our June cover story, “You Be The Judge: PayerView Reveals Who Treats Physicians Right,” is the culmination of a complex effort to develop a data-driven method of ranking the nation’s healthcare payers, public and private, on the basis of their efficiency and effectiveness in working with physician practices. PayerView, which debuted in 2006, is an index that uses actual transaction data to grade payers on measures such as how promptly and accurately they pay doctors, how often they deny claims, and how frequently physicians’ staff must pursue errors, late payments, and other problems. Never before has a publication used hard data to rank payers on what physicians often call the “hassle factor” – the degree of difficulty a payer represents when it comes to getting paid.
