How do housing, along with space, community resources and other development issues, combine to impact health? From infrastructure to proximity to parks, an increasing amount of attention being is to how one’s surrounding space directly impacts wellness and disease.
Two experts will discuss the connection during a May 25 AHCJ webcast that will look at both the medical impact as well from a community planning perspective.
The members-only webcast, “Healthy Neighborhoods: Covering new approaches to well-being,” will look at examples of efforts to tackle the social determinants of health with representatives from Purpose Built Communities and Build Healthy Places Network.
This hour-long training will discuss the ties between the community and the health gap with Dr. Doug Jutte, a pediatrician and University of California professor who leads Build Healthy Places Network, which works to bring together community developers and health practitioners. It also will examine some efforts taken in some communities to re-examine their space with an eye toward affordability, access and lifestyle with Purpose Built Communities President Carol Naughton, whose nonprofit consulting firm aims to transform poor, urban neighborhoods develop.
Participating AHCJ members will gain context for covering health in their communities with an eye toward inequities and space and how they are impacted by mixed-income housing, education and wellness facilities. Members will also get specific new story ideas and resources from the webinar, moderated by Susan Heavey, AHCJ’s topic leader for social determinants of health care.
