Career Development: Freelancers' Corner

Health Journalism 2011 offered several sessions focused on the needs of freelancers

Amanda Moon, Scientific American Books, (right) discusses how she works with writers as MSNBC.com's Linda Dahlstrom looks on.

We love writers, declared the three panelists at "What Editors Wish Writers Knew," a well-attended freelancers' session at Health Journalism 2011.

They shared their insights into how the editorial process works, some of the realities of the organizational structure of magazines, how to get their attention when you pitch a story and the need for writers to do some research about a publication's audience.

Eight months later, freelancer still generating story ideas from fellowship

Meryl Davids and Lorna Benson at the CDC in Atlanta.

Meryl Davids Landau writes about her experience as a 2008-09 AHCJ-CDC Health Journalism Fellow, meeting her "fellow Fellows" and CDC officials, what topics she learned more about and how she has been able to translate that experience into a number of articles for various news outlets.

She says that, eight months later, she is still developing and pitching stories based on what she learned during her week in Atlanta and that the fellowship boosted her credibility with editors.
