Training: Workshops & Seminars

Covering Ebola and the next killer contagion

01/21/15 - 01/22/15     Washington, DC

The Association of Health Care Journalists and the Poynter Institute invite journalists from all media, local and national to apply for this two-day, in-depth workshop.

Apply now to join leading health care experts and journalists. We will select 20 journalists from around the U.S. to take part in the workshop. A generous grant from The McCormick Foundation will pay participants' airfare, tuition and hotel expenses.

Ebola caught the headlines in 2014, and is still claiming lives in Africa. While that crisis is far from over, other devastating health concerns loom on the horizon, many of which barely make headlines. An unusually deadly flu season has been forecast for 2015. Millions of Americans are getting infections that are resistant to traditional antibiotics. Measles is surging. Chikungunya is invading. How well have these been handled by health officials? How about the media? What threats may be ahead in the new year?

Learn the real threats that so few talk about and find ways to cover them in a clear-eyed and informed way.

Among our speakers:

• Dr. Michael Bell, deputy director of Division of Healthcare Quality Promotion, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

• Dr. Art Caplan, head of the Division of Medical Ethics at New York University Langone Medical Center

• Janet St. James, WFAA-Dallas health reporter

• Mike Stobbe of The Associated Press
